If we rebrand "making OIA requests" as Integrity Sport, we could be eligible for a lot of grants. šŸ¤”

I love* charity funding bodies whose grant criteria do not allow grants for "operating costs." I understand it's nice to be able to show they funded a "project" that achieved something additional, but these policies do nothing to build a sustainable charity sector. *do not love

"Costello also failed to supply the Ombudsman with information he required for his investigation." That's actually a crime (s30(b) OA via s29 OIA). The penalty is trivial, but a prosecution may encourage les autres.

All this comes back to: the Ombudsman may not be able to penalise agencies but you still Do Not Ignore The Ombudsman.

We sort of do, it's just unevenly distributed. Councils "work with" farmers in breach of RMA (even to the extent of transferring them land). Regulators like Privacy Commissioner prefer education first. Police have discretion not to charge.

(Veto an ombudsman recommendation I mean, before it becomes binding.)

It's pretty rare I think. The one that comes to mind is the SG vs the CHEs, and I recall they complied before there was a judgment. Ministers can also veto a decision using an Order in Council but I don't think that's been used since the late 80s. Either thing would be scandalous.

The ICO has issued an Enforcement Notice to the MetPolice due to its persistent failure to meet legal FOI deadlines. The ICO has now taken action against 10 of the 44 police forces in E&W&NI, 23% of them, due to non-compliance with FOI. For a sector meant to uphold the law, this record is appalling.

They built Te Awe and Arapaki so quickly after central was closed, it was impressive. They just launched a new website this week I'm still adjusting to. Tip: "Research databases" is a lot more than just research databases.

Technically, if you want to be complicated about it, the part of the annual subscription that extends into next FY is an asset. But you should not need to be doing accrual accounting to that level of detail.

Depreciation is just a way of accounting for an expense across all the periods it was used (the "matching principle"). You used this in one year, so it's just an expense in that year.

It's just an expense, like a mobile phone subscription or a newspaper subscription. Calling it an asset and depreciating it 100% in the same year is just a complicated way of counting it as an expense.

This place has 90s halogen wall uplights. Wonderfully bright, warm, and dimmable but insane power consumption. I just can't find similarly bright LEDs at all, let alone a pleasant colour. Let alone dimmable. Let alone smart.

UK labour people on my feed gloating about their "good politics" of winning by *checks notes* a massive proportion of their opponent's voters staying home rather than vote for anyone let alone you. Inspiring, sustainable leadership there. Nice one. Good politics.

Every UK outlet is using the phrase "Labour landslide," implying a major shift towards Labour. It's not true. 2019 (Corbyn) Labour votes: 10,269,051 2024 (Starmer) Labour votes: 9,650,254 (99.69% counted) A stunning result, but for a different reason than the news is implying.

"Bespoke LLM" is probably not the best term, but customised LLMs are certainly possible and available as a service from e.g. Azure. Not from scratch: model customisation starts from the public data base model and is then trained further on your private data. It's just a waste of time and money. šŸ˜†

It doesn't mean much. Just the classic pattern (especially in FPP elections including for our electorate seats): people are more inclined to vote for minor parties when it's unlikely to affect the result.
