I assume exorcism assessments are not actually carried out by a trio of bffs who roam the streets of queens day and night looking for clues, but that’s fine, this is speculative fiction and that (plus david being a forty year old seminarian who lives alone and just does his day job) is their gimme

watching “evil” with me is definitely very fun for my husband who gets to hear my running commentary on whether or not that’s how things Really Are

I once won a game of cranium on the trivia question “the bosphorus strait is located in which city?” by the mental pathway “swimming the bosphorus means converting to orthodoxy -> symbolic center of orthodoxy is constantinople -> 🎶now it’s istanbul🎵”

nah they’re mistaken. it’s always converting TO the church associated with the river, same with swimming the thames (becoming anglican) or the bosphorus (orthodox)

all the discourse about the relationships between trauma/mental illness/neurodivergence/material circumstances and harmful behavior, would be solved if everyone had a robust concept of venial, grave, & mortal sins and degrees of cooperation & culpability

my Ultra Hot Take is that this also can apply to like War History Guys. get them talking and it’s like they’re discussing a really elaborate game of warhammer 40k, all stats matchups and R&D advances and absolutely no sense of sorrow. not good

and I do not believe that you can desensitize yourself to very very realistic fictional depictions of something and totally bar that from affecting how you react to the real thing. I just don’t. we forget all the time that news stories and celebrities and such are actual real events and people

I find hyperrealistic horrible books, movies etc, to be, well, Horrible. they make me feel horrible. I don’t think it’s valueless in art but I don’t find it entertaining, and I certainly don’t seek out a lot of it bc then I would feel Horrible all the time, OR it would eventually stop bothering me/

people are not very good at compartmentalizing fiction vs. the distant reality. this is why people can be such freaks about ~true crime~, harass actors into hiding bc they hate the characters they play, treat political analysis like they’re writing fanfic - loads of plainly observable examples

since we’re talking about Dark Fiction today I’d like to throw in that I think it’s no good to spend a ton of one’s time taking in hyperrealistic violent material. at a certain point it’s not different than watching actual snuff. at best you’re traumatizing yourself, at worst you numb yourself to it

“coming in tabula rasa and saying absolutely everything completely off the cuff in the moment like it’s stream of consciousness, but it all comes out well-organized and you don’t forget anything or make any mistakes” is certainly….one way to define “capable of extemporaneous speaking”

yeah I don’t think I’m as firm on the “it’s true often than not” side as you but it’s really silly when people pretend there’s some complete division, especially when they themselves completely ignore that standard when it suits them
