I can tell this is staged because nobody has EVER put the whiteboard in that part of Eggers 100 in the history of teaching.

This should be front-and-center in every “hey why are so many VCs backing Trump this time” article. Joe Biden has spent 3.5 years rebuilding administrative capacity. We now have regulators actually saying “hey knock it off that’s illegal.” The VCs would much prefer autocracy to accountability.

Congratulations to @aecoppock.bsky.social whose book, “Persuasion in Parallel,” has won the Robert E. Lane Best Book Award from the APSA Political Psychology Section!  Thanks to Margit Tavits and Josh Gubler for serving on the committee.

Good thread that gets at why it’s important to present Trump’s crimes as a single coherent story rather than as fragmented individual ones.

New paper on what public discourse gets wrong about misinformation. We push back on causal claims about harms from mass exposure to social media misinfo. Instead, we argue for focusing on exposure/effects on the fringe -- and, importantly, in non-US contexts. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Same with "I show that this prominent theory still works in this completely different, but very important, context that did not even exist when the theory was invented."

Why going back into the field with surveys *right now* -- especially so-called panel-backs where previous respondents are recontacted -- can help answer two of the biggest questions in election survey research. A thread.

News orgs writing headlines about the conviction like “Will it Matter?” as if whether it matters is unrelated to coverage asking whether it matters. Whether it matters is UP TO YOU, bozos. Cover it like it does and it will.

Americans tend to over-estimate low-end incomes. Would their attitudes toward redistribution (to the working poor) change if we told them the real incomes of low-wage jobs?

@emilythorson.bsky.social and I try to find out and conclude it probably would not make a difference. doi.org/10.1177/1532...

One more interesting aspect of this paper: it's a pre-registered replication of an experiment run almost ten years previously, where there WAS an effect. What do we make of this difference? We have some thoughts...

We also examine specific potential mechanisms: does wage information have a bigger impact if you personally know someone in those jobs? If there's an explicit contrast made with high-income wages? If we ask them to guess before giving them the correct info? Nope, nope, and nope.

Exposure to investigative reporting "made respondents more willing to hold the incumbent mayor accountable for neglecting public infrastructure, to support a pro-spending challenger candidate, and to directly support a costly public spending measure."

I am optimistic about this getting sorted -- so far I think both the students and the administration have been respectful of each other and open to making constructive progress. I really hope that continues.

2) Make them part of commencement. Be proud to have activist students standing up for what they believe. Surround the encampment with banners proclaiming "Syracuse University Supports Free Speech." Have the Tully Center co-sponsor a commencement event with them.

Apparently S.U. administration has asked our encampment to leave before commencement (dailyorange.com/2024/05/enca...). They have refused. I'm just going to note here a list of other things administration could do INSTEAD of calling the cops and/or issuing violations, in case anyone is listening.

My kids were very very into the “ordinary people change the world” series from about ages 3-5. Some are political, some are less so. Their faves were Abraham Lincoln and Sonia sotomayor.

Hooray! @emayfarris.bsky.social and I have a chapter in this fantastic book on "Supplementing Qualitative Work with Surveys, and Vice Versa." We walk through (with lots of examples) using open-ended survey questions to collect qualitative data, using qual work to inform survey design, and more!

I feel like I spend a lot of time lately advising grad students to simplify their experiments, drop unnecessary conditions, sharpen the theory, eliminate unnecessary covariates. It’s good to keep it straightforward!
