I can understand putting a 1-4 hour time window law down i.e “cannot track LIVE data but only from the past (X) time” because there’s some genuinely dangerous fans out there , but Outright?! Hell no.

From a UK perspective it's striking to see how laws lobbied for by the super rich seem to be so easily passed in the national legislature while any meaningfully improved rights and benefits for ordinary people hardly ever pass. It'd be an unthinkable state of affairs here—we'd call it corruption.

Why do private jets even exist. Why can’t people use first class on planes? Or helicopters?

this sounds like someone who doesn't know better asking "please do LADD but more"? I don't see anything to suggest it'll change the actual trackability via independent receiver networks (thank goodness)

They should be. Probably. But the since the concert schedule of rock stars is absolutely public, the rationalization that it would be difficult to impossible to quantify their carbon footprint is shit of the bull, as they say.

This will backfire. Some billionaire's jet will go down somewhere and nobody will be able to help the authorities because they couldn't track the jet.

I don't agree with billionaires using private jets for convenience, however I don't agree that anyone should just be able to track where you're gonna be at for safety reasons. We can put a stop to it's use without being stalkers.

Very strong Video Privacy Protection Act (enacted after Robert Bork’s video rental history was made public) energy here. Specific stupid laws to address specific stupid situations. To me this one screams “protect Clarence Thomas from people tracking where he’s flying” for his bribery trips.

This legislation doesn’t provide any new protections for them though, almost every aircraft is registered to a holdings company with the registered agent being the owner’s attorney. People who spot planes make the ownership association through photograph evidence on the tarmac, not FAA registration.

I agree the rich shouldn’t be able to willy nilly generate emissions rivaling a small city, but can you imagine the chaos if Taylor Swift tried to fly commercial? That plane would never get off the ground.

Suspect this will obfuscate registration .info and scrub data feeds, but the realtime flight tracking sites (ala flightaware) pull data from transponders (which I imagine include static Identifiers), thus tracking will become more of a scavenger hunt

The language is in the FAA Reauthorization Bill as introduced in June 9, 2023 by the House transportation committee chair Sam Graves (with 3 cosponsors), so it’s annoyingly difficult to figure out who put it in there, but the source of this was the Republican House

So we can no longer track TFG meeting w/Russian Oligarchs, or his plane when he flees from justice (which I believe the coward will do rather than serve his time). Makes you wonder who else is being protected & why. I know, I sound conspiracy theorist here but journalists learned A LOT tracking TFG.
