The greatest scam in social welfare programs is planning around the idea that individuals exist under hardships because they lack motivation or education as opposed to the truth: That most are suitably motivated and educated but lack the time and resources required to change their circumstances.
I remember turning up at the job centre unable to pay for train fares to jobs etc. I had a degree. "What are you doing here?" they asked. And didn't believe me that I was applying for jobs but nobody was hiring me. And said I had to apply for everything, including totally unsuitable/impossible stuff
Or in the case of 2023 and beyond—they’re trying their damnedest but can’t individual solution their way out of systemic problems like price gouging, algorithms, AI, interest rates, and how it’s now ridiculous trying to get a normal-ass job!
I would love to work towards becoming a voice actor/book narration. I havr NO time or energy after working my iob to pay my bills and keep a roof over my head.
I want more then minimum wage and I know a thing I am skilled enough to do. I lack time and resources to do it.
A reason why programs with high compliance overhead don’t work as well? Even if you get the benefit, the cost in time and resources impedes making progress
-looks around at everybody including themselves spending half of the time they could be working begging for money to deal with crises-
Yeah I'd say that tracks...
Turns out it's a hell of a lot easier to commit time and effort to improving your situation if you're not spending all of your time and effort trying to figure out whether or not you'll be able to have food tomorrow. 🙄
Means tested is just wasteful, full stop. A bit of money makes a big difference to poor people trying to survive, and setting things up to tax from the wealthiest is the fairest and most effective strategy.
