it's namely because Amtrak is forced to share that line with freighters. Some time after you leave Santa Barbara, the train can only go *15mph* until you're out of Salinas. So there's just one train a day, it leaves LA Union Station around 9, you're not in Oakland til 9:30 at night.

I didn't see this movie til a year ago, and HOLY SHIT. As someone with 25+ years of reptile husbandry and stewardship experience, I was in stitches. The scene where the snapping turtle unalives a woman had me roaring because the entire PREMISE of a snapping turtle doing that is just so ridiculous!.

At the size of the largest businesses in the US, there is no “economy of scale” benefit to consolidation. They are at maximum economy of scale. They’re already behemoths. The benefit of consolidation is just that fewer people get a choice, and so they get all the money.
