I don’t believe we should do away with representative democracy altogether, though we should improve it through proportional representation and radical campaign finance reform, both of which have been demanded here, without success, for 160 years.

Already have proportional representation, and of course getting $$ out of elections is a no-brainer option. However I'm not a big fan of more direct democracy like referendums. "The people" aren't really that bright and are very pathetic, so poor outcomes can be expected. Ranked choice is great.

Have you thought about Ranked Choice Voting which might be an easier reform? At the very least it seems to moderate some of the more extreme candidates.

The paradox is of course that the Tories deserve electoral oblivion for what they’ve done yet at the same time the only way to bring about PR is via a hung parliament with the Lib Dems as the kingmakers. Won’t happen this time round.

PR in a polarised society changes very little. The coalitions merely represent a disaggregated X. The far right and fringe parties do better too. We need root and branch constitutional reform, a federal UK and real workplace democracy.

I'd definitely like to see citizens' assemblies with real power as a permanent part of the system.
