peak 2024 story, the rotting zombie of a dead company murdered by private equity uses generative AI to make an awful branding movie about the origin story for a company that has not existed in any recognizable way in many years

And doesn't even tell the story! It's just "He had a dream" and like what, did he invent the concept of a toy store? Because I don't think he did but whatever he did do is never stated

i have no special love for the former conglomerate known as toys r us, but there’s something that’s just kind of hilariously ghoulish and nihilistic about all of this

The boy turning his head at various points: that isn't human movement. That's a T. Rex turning its gaze to you. That's a faerie tripping balls. Human heads and necks just don't move like that.

The fact that this was at Cannes and isn't a real ad tells you that this was produced and promoted by the creative agency, trying to show off how "innovative" they are. They probably couldn't have convinced an active brand to agree to do this, so they picked a dead one.

Toys R' Us Canada, at least, continues to operate about 80 full-sized stores? The brand exists in a meaningful way; just not in the US.
