People like me have been weirdos on the edge of society that nobody likes—talking about amending the Constitution and expanding the Court and abolishing the EC and resizing the House—and now if we don’t do these things, we will be destroyed. Radical problems require radical solutions.

Expanding the Court would probably be THE smartest, quickest way to avert fucking disaster. So naturally, we will not do it. Sigh.

From one weirdo on the edge to another . . . been saying those things for ages as well. But as mom often told me in younger days, "No hay peor ciego que el que no quiere ver" (there is no worse blind person than the one who refuses to see).

Also, abolish the Senate.

If you are on the edge of society, I'm out there with you. I've been on all those issues for at least 15 years. My radical reforms include taking the house to about 3K members, turning the Senate into a PR body, eliminating partisan identity from ballots, and these don't feel radical at all.

in grad school (IR) I said we don’t need to repeal the Apportionment Act of 1929 bc it’s already unconstitutional, but obvs. SCOTUS is never gonna rule that way, so we should repeal it someone said “then we’d have over a thousand house reps” I said “so make a bigger fucking building”

I agree that all of these things would be good! The problem is that it isn't possible to do them within the current constitutional order. So if we're doing "radical solutions" in that sense we're talking starting essentially from scratch.

Grew up in a family where grandad organized lumberjack unions when that could get you shot, and my first political memory was helping my pop canvass for Jesse Jackson. The fucked-up thing is when you realize that the fringe weirdoes aren't really that fringe.

Personally I think we should scrap it and start all the way over with the premise being that the people should rule, and money and professional politicians should be banished from political power. #demarchy #sortition #citizensassemblies

So much needs to change and it's so damn hard to do it. But yes, it needs to happen somehow.

They arent even radical. The fact that as a whole Americans think so is a large problem. We resized the house for most of our existence. We packed the court for most of our existence. And the EC might be the only thing most of us all agree is anti-democratic.
