For most of its history, America hasn’t been a democracy, by any meaningful definition of the term!
This isn’t some It Can’t Happen Here shit, in a way, it’s already happened. It just may not have directly affected you.

Biden is denying his poll numbers, touting a "peace plan" as war rages in the Middle East, and arguing that he's not "frail." This is simply a brutal interview and a bad position to be running from.

A high level Dem strategist tells me: "Biden has put Dems in a no-win position. They don’t want to go out there and tank him, but no one can credibly tell their constituents that he should be president for another 4 1/2 years."

I mean, I don't think it's fully as simple procedurally as some make it out to me but the nominee is chosen at the convention and Kamala Harris becomes president if he steps down. The devil will be in the details but it's not unserious at all. Many in the party are discussing this.

They went on to say if Black electeds "just want an African American" on the ticket and are less personally loyal to Kamala Harris "then, it's open."

The Dem member of Congress I spoke to said "African Americans are the most formidable bloc" in discussions of Biden's future. "If their delegation is more loyal to having a Black woman than they are to their state party orgs than it is Kamala's."

According to the Dem member of Congress, I spoke to, before this news leaked out, Warner had real momentum. They said Warner has "a really good number of very consequential senators" willing to tell Biden to drop out. www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

The Dem member of Congress who spoke to me also said, "I don't know if Biden can win at this point and that frightens me."

Just talked with a Democratic member of Congress about Biden. They told me: "This is like Lehman Brothers in 2008 where everyone said the company is going nowhere, it was fine, and then all of a sudden it wasn't."

On Threads, I encountered many people who enjoy Zuck or various expensive forms of fake surfing. I do not want to meet those people.

So far, Biden and his inner circle are trying to power through this and stay the course.
There are Democrats pushing for a change and the most serious ones recognize Kamala as the only option. I think it would take a few electeds in competitive seats calling for him to drop to move the needle.

I just add the clarification in case anyone is confused when I say I am pretty sure of what I saw. Separate from this and even as a little kid - and this was like 30 years ago - I found the amount of Confederate stuff there disturbing.

Some months later, I was looking at some SPLC publication and saw a picture of a klan hood that had like snaps where a mask could attach. It looked exactly like what she had. I am pretty damn sure it's what I saw.

I was like 8 or 9. She wasn't calling attention to it and it wasn't like standing up so not very visible or unmistakably triangular. It was like hanging by the register. I really remember the exchange cause I was confused by it and she gave a weird vibe.

As a little kid, I had this phase where I was very interested in the Civil War. My parents took me to Gettysburg and I got a union hat at one of the gift shops. This old woman at the register kept asking why I didn't choose a gray one. I later realized she had what I am pretty sure was a klan hood

The "Hawk Tuah Girl" viral moment happening right as our politics is getting even darker kind of perfectly sums up how decadent and dumb everything is.

If the few big companies left are going to be using their rare resources to advance an agenda we need more clarity and distance from attempts at straight news.

Part of the difference in the new landscape is there are so many less newspapers, magazines, and alt weeklies. An individual opinion page used to be part of an argument and dialogue. Now it's more like a megaphone.

Much of my view here is seeing people
who consume this stuff see no delineation. It erodes trust in news at large. The efforts to supposedly run multiple perspectives also serve to obscure institutional agendas.

I mean the qualify of opinion pieces is another matter, but it could be discussed much more clearly away from the page.

Opinion sections and editorials have been there since the very beginning of newspapers. It's peoples' consumption and the overall size of the landscape that has changed. We are dealing with a new trust gap and a collapse in the overall size of the industry.

I think the NYT or other papers owning opinion publications is great. Should be separately named. And, honestly, they should be devoted to single ideologies. Just makes agendas more clear. The current setup erodes trust in news.

There will be procedural and electoral issues to keep in mind if Biden moves on. I continue to think the only realistic option is Kamala. Any running mate for her would need to be from a safe seat. For that reason, people trying to game this out are much more focused on governors than Congress.

After a couple days of conversations, I can say Dems at every level are wondering whether Biden will step
aside and gaming out potential replacement scenarios. Biden's team is calling some allies to take their temperature.

We are a young soccer culture. We could fast track the process by eliminating MLS salary cap and by having it stop strangling lower tier leagues. We also could speed things up by bringing in a head coach from a better soccer landscape. I doubt he would have come here but Bielsa was up for grabs!

One person suggested I underestimate the seriousness of this moment and the right. I wonder where they were on January 6? I wonder what theyve done since. Surely they have addressed the issue actively rather than just sitting on a social platform calling people fascists.

What I personally don't want is hate speech and lies or deranged conspiracies. Those pollute discussion. There's a lot between the bulk of Bluesky - particularly last year - and that. We've just covered a few examples.
