I've written about this before.
Hearings matter.
Regardless of their outcome, they draw a line in the sand regarding what is NOT acceptable, and demonstrate that to the public.
A hearing regarding Justice Alito would also show the Democrats pushing back.
It is very hard to argue that Trump is an existential threat and then allow people who are partnering up, using their influence and power, and loudly supporting that existential threat to operate with impunity. It gives the impression that their behavior is ok, just who they’re doing it for is wrong
No the hearing won't make him resign. But signaling to your voters that it's a serious issue that you take seriously beats Durbin's plan of resuming blue slips. I mean, how tone deaf can this man be?
I know GOP hearings about crazy get a ton of attention, for how little substance, but this should get 10x the attention and would be good for that line in the sand reason.
I think Thomas is a bigger issue. We already know the conservative justices are dominionists who want to subjugate women. But Thomas got loads of money. Writing off a $275k loan is a tax liability. And his wife was pushing election lies.
I think this is important. Part of the frustration w Biden and dems, I think, is the sense that they’re not up for this fight. Fighting harder and having hearings will help.
I agree with you.
BUT ALSO, Dems have not found a way to discipline the radical Republicans on SJC (like Blackburn and Cruz) who'd use the opportunity to say, "Hey Sammy, where do you buy your flags, bc I'm in the market too."
They can also lay groundwork for further pushes later. Out of nowhere, Expanding the Supreme Court or jurisdiction stripping sound radical, scary. After months of televised hearings about sordid corruption scandals, Court reform feels natural.
What frustrates me the most as a lay person is that my understanding is that a significant amount of investigation and discovery is a natural part of trials, and even these hearings. We might not be “there yet” but won’t we find out more in a hearing? Maybe we’ll “get there” and maybe we won’t.
