On July 4th, 1826 John Adams & Thomas Jefferson, two members of the Committee of Five, authors of the Declaration of Independence, died 50 years to the day after its adaptation in 1776.
I found their dual obituary randomly folded deep inside my copy of book published in 1757. (1/2)

Extremely frustrating to hear legal experts analyzing the SCOTUS ruling on immunity like just another case - it's an inherently normalizing act. People need to stop playing constitutional Calvinball and treat them like political actors.

So I was offline most of the day. Didn't hear about Supreme Court until an hour ago. . . . I guess that's why spouse came home and asked me if I was okay. Fine, I said, puzzled.

Living under authoritarian regimes is both relatively boring and normal AND incredibly corrosive to the human soul. These things can absolutely co-exist. This is why everyone needs to resist authoritarians, even people who privately assume they’ll be just fine.

Tbf, behave like you got a hot tip about plans to burn the Library of Alexandria is why we sleep in the smaller bedroom. Because the books obviously get the bigger room.

Benjamin Franklin’s epitaph in my 1813 copy of the Memoirs of David Rittenhouse by William Barton.
Franklin reportedly wrote it in 1728 when he was 22 years old; he was 84 on April 17, 1790 when he finally got to use it. #c18th

SOAPBOX TIME I hate how many times I read things like "nobody cares about the world" and "humanity is the virus" and "our species is too inept/evil/selfish to survive" online. I almost never see anyone talking about the many, many people who are doing incredibly hard, complex, good work

This includes a good graphic about why an adequate waterpack is not enough. When and how fast the snow melts are critical factors. Here in Washington, the snowpack is poor. Yay! Record rainfall this week, the end of May. Did it add to the snowpack or just wash it away

Oh it's the ongoing Wyoming public lands corner crossing case

Did congress intend to give all the land to the railroads? Or just the checkerboards?
