in a lot of cases like this the true range of the species is probably underestimated and it's precisely the absence of scientific surveying in these areas that leads to this phenomenon. there was a paper a couple years ago that documented areas of the ocean that were statistically undersurveyed

new video from schmidt ocean that provides probably one of the best overviews i've seen of deep sea ROV exploration. the deep sea is not alien. it's just an environment different from ours, inhabited by organisms that have adapted accordingly. they are the majority, not us. 🦑🧪
