That they like a guy who has no consistent ideological placement, has embraced many conspiracy theories, was horrible and abusive to his ex wife, had literal brain worms that he admits have affected his judgment, and now it turns out, has been accused of sexual assault and maybe barbecued a dog

But there are a LOT of real swing voters (maybe 1/3rd of them) who like RFK and if you want to understand why you can’t just appeal to them on the basis of policy keep in mind …

And OF those independents who are true swing voters - meaning they have switched parties or just now lean more heavily toward the opposition party - that’s a tiny portion of independents and even tinier vis a vis the whole electorate

And then I have to explain that independent voters are not de facto swing voters and most of them vote consistently in a very partisan fashion over several cycles; they just don’t like the party labels because they don’t like the party

I keep saying that swing voters are hard to target because there aren’t that many of them and an unsurprising number of armchair analyst men who’ve never worked in politics or even volunteered for a candidate they like are, like, no, dummy independent voters are a huge demo

Either the Democrats will run Biden, or he'll say he can't continue the campaign and Democrats will run Harris. Either is newsworthy, but neither is nearly as radical as running a pro-insurrection convicted felon with legal immunity he's eager to use.

Ah ok, just realized I conflated what you were saying with another thread suggesting there was some directive from the top. I’m sorry. Just frustrated with some of the takes. I’ll delete the QT dunk

Yes but that could be anything the opinion writer thinks, which could be, replace Biden. I was asked to write about it before and I wrote a column about what I thought it was important for them to articulate (tho I didn’t write the hed and didn’t like it) www.nytimes.com/2024/06/25/o...

I was asked if I wanted to write about Alex Baldwin’s manslaughter lawsuit, for example, and I said lololol no, but thank you for thinking of me.

You literally said she was told to write about it and that’s not true. When my editors ask me to write about a topic and I don’t have a real opinion I can and do say no. And full time writers have even more latitude to write what they want.

The downside of this is when you see someone with an opinion you don’t like or think is bad, that really is your opinion. But it’s true that we don’t get to write whatever we want.

I mean some people didn’t listen to what Trump said in the last term about Gaza. I did and also worked for Jared Kushner when I was at the NYO and he was still a putative Democrat. They were completely aligned with Bibi, which is unsurprising because Netanyahu is friends with the Kushners

I’m more worried about rollout, technicalities—new candidate (and let’s assume it’s someone with name ID) getting on all of the ballots, fundraising money transferred so that a new candidate can use it without violating campaign finance rules and so on

I think it depends on your timeline. I lean slightly Biden stay because I think there are a lot of replacement hurdles that have little to do with the candidate (Biden or anyone else.) But so far there’s only one guy confidently yelling at me that no one wants that because Gaza

Maybe, but too early to tell. And Rs will try to knock any replacement off the ballot in key states — and might succeed, in which case even the best candidate possible can’t win. It’s not just a matter of political will; it’s also a matter of logistics

I think it’s just highly engaged Dem syndrome where if you’re surrounded by other highly engaged people and in an electoral space you mistakenly think they’re like a regular voter. (Also true of some media people so not suggesting there’s only one type of person who has this problem )
