For decades, the main library at UCLA had the anodyne name University Research Library because the person most responsible for getting it built was an English professor named Hugh G. Dick and the university refused to name it after him.
The main library at Brown U was funded by John D. Rockefeller, so it had his name. Students nicknamed it The Rock, and the Rockefellers complained that that was disrespectful. So students started calling it The John, and the Rockefellers decided that The Rock was acceptable.
This is much better than the silliest building name at my alma mater: the Hall Health Center.
Many buildings on campus are named by appending "hall" to the surname of some dignitary. But the health center is named after a guy named "Hall".
They didn't have the courage to name it Hall Health Hall.
