I was leading a student program so didn't get to do much visiting (or research stops) but it was wonderful to do all kinds of touristy stuff with wide eyed young people. Most vivid takeaway is that Oxford really leans way more into being Oxford than you even expect

the awkward thing is that functional capitalism is more or less inseparable from representative democracy. capitalism requires markets, legally binding contracts, and a functional judicial system to work best. this is a real reason why capitalism is different from colonialism and mercantilism, etc

When I worked in the Department of Health and Human Services, we weren’t allowed to spend federal funds on a water cooler. That luxury might erode public trust. So if you didn’t want to drink questionable tap water, you gave personal funds to the “water club” that paid for water cooler refills.
