As I understand it, he hasn't promised not to end it, he's just not promising to end it, which is a different thing. My guess is it'll go pretty quick if/when Labour win.

Another good piece on the wrong-headedness of FFB campaign against book festivals - the publishing industry equivalent of throwing paint on a Van Gogh (has no impact whatsoever on the fossil fuel industries, serves only to damage something other people enjoyed)

Becoming more and more irritable about the private school VAT thing. I pay VAT on my glasses, which I literally need to see (but equally, I concede, I did not need to spend a three figure sum on some Oliver Peoples' frames). Is that class war?

Lots of hardline rhetoric from Starmer this morning about small boats. But read it closely and you can see the clear outline of a rational policy: Ending Rwanda. Processing the claims iandunt.substack.com/p/labour-is-...

Almost as if Brexit was a fraudulent prospectus that, once enacted, was bound to disappoint the people who voted for it and reinforce the resentment of people who didn't. Remarkable.

Surely "Make Britain Better" is the implied pledge of every party's election manifesto in this country? That is a patriotic aspiration - and a good one! I agree if it is associated with nostalgia for an imagined pre-immigration idyll, that can be racist, but it doesn't have to be.

Our flag isn't right wing or the exclusive property of racists, it's everyone's. If you're standing to run the country, it makes total sense to have the flag on your literature. "We want to run Britain, but we'd rather not be linked to its flag" would be a stupid position for any party to take.

Remember, the political parties are not the same. If you think Labour are the same as the Conservatives you are the wanker here.

I think it won't need to be enforced beyond about 30, or 40 at the most; existing smokers will be dying out, new ones won't be coming through, so the market will stop being viable. Shops will just stop selling cigs.

Can't remember which team it was, but for the full expression of the fatalistic resignation of non glory hunting football fandom, you can't beat: We lose every week We lose every we-e-eek You're nothing special We lose every week (to the tune of Sloop John B)

Reminds me of the old gag (which no longer applies) about the best way to make a small fortune out of football being to start with a big one. Trump's managed to do that without recourse to the beautiful game.

The King of England lies dying and one of his sons has been exiled. A princess has vanished. Plague stalks the land and the Treasury has been plundered. NOW is the time for strange women lying in ponds to distribute swords to form the basis of government.

Bit unfair on Tim Dowling; I've always liked his writing, and the band he's in is pretty good, too. Mind you, I enjoyed my bowl of porridge this morning as well.

I've got a 2004 campaign badge saying "Lick Bush", but that was an obvious double (or, arguably, single) entendre.

You have no idea how pleased I was to see this quote; yesterday, my wife was describing the show to me and I said it sounded like a cross between a parlour game and the Stamford Prison Experiment. Glad to know it's not just me with the elderly psychology references!
