Middle-aged straight Texan man with YIMBY/centrish opinions who believes it's good to rethink historical race narratives, that trans folk deserve respect and guns do not have inherent rights. And no I will not call them "skeets"

I suspect both sides get their way if the Biden campaign ignores the ballot measure itself while attacking Trump's role in dissolving Roe. Conservative pro choice voters can then either stick with Trump while supporting local choice, or connect the dots and vote for Biden, but it's their call

On a morning conference call with state governors, Trump suggests they get medical supplies on their own instead of looking to the federal government. This will end up pitting governors against each other in the bidding for ventilators, respirators and protective gear.

10 years ago, if a story got taken down, esp for questioning power too much, there'd be weeks-long rioting. now it's like the part in Clue where the gang goes in the kitchen, finds a new dead body, and instead of freaking out, trudges sullenly back to the drawing room web.archive.org/web/20240301...

It's not just Biden's capacity to govern though. The average life expectancy of a 82-year-old white American male is 7.3 years. That's the longevity profile of a Stage 2 lung cancer patient. If this is indeed the Most Important Election Ever, why go all-in with that candidate? Do we remember RBG?

I still do not understand the wildly common take that this answer was some kind of faux pas. Haley in fact *aced* the answer. The currency of credibility in the GOP today is to pointedly refuse to frankly discuss any topic related to America's racist past, and that's exactly what she did

Tesla has shoddy reliability. At 1.71 mechanical issues per car, they're 27th of 28 brands Consumer Reports tested, with repair costs 30% higher, fewer repair options, more expensive parts, excessive tire costs, etc. It's basically an EV with a Jaguar cost profile: www.topspeed.com/tesla-reliab...

I'd rather you explain how vacancies are driving high prices when the cities with the highest price gains are the cities with the lowest vacancies (Austin, DC, San Jose, Portland), and vice versa (NO, Tampa, Memphis, Pittsburg). Strong inverse correlations are um, not a sign of direct causation

The only, and I mean only, good reason to have movies playing on the dashboard of your car is to entertain your young children on long trips. So it stands to reason that anyone who cares about this feature would be kinda pissed about Tesla ditching Disney+, right? Customer-focused, my ass

Sure - the social media ecosystem has been hijacked by outrage merchants, and it's driving people to gloom and doom. I'd also add the psychological effects of inflation. Prices may have stopped going up but I still feel a ping of sticker shock every time I shop. That should diminish over time fwiw

It's the kind of statement that can come across very differently depending on the tone. Sounds like you meant it in a light sarcastic joking way, but without the benefit of tone it looks like a sincere accusation of coasting on privilege, which would indeed be odd coming from a stranger

Obamacare was supposed to end denial of insurance coverage for pre-existing conditions. But in 46 states, if you select Medicare Advantage at age 65, you can be denied coverage if you try to switch out. Matthew Cunningham-Cook has that story:

This is true, but it's also unreasonable to expect a sitting president to fix that by himself given the composition of Congress and the global economic context. Fully in context, Biden has done as well as anyone could reasonably expect. Being disappointed is fine, blaming Biden is the mistake

Right. Seems to me that the only sensible reason the GOP MAGA caucus kicked out McCarthy was to install someone who would refuse to compromise with moderates or Dems and thereby put the government into an extended shutdown in an election year. The shutdown is the point

This is the enshittification cycle of digital capitalism - when money's cheap and investors are desperate for any kind of return, start up a bunch of disruptive ventures that capture market share by losing money hand over fist; when money's tight, pull the rug. Let them eat cake 2.0

Yes, exactly. Lots of lecturing about spending and lazy application of simple models from the 70's, not enough thinking through the process by which prices go up, how today is different from the 70's (e.g., global supply chains, no labor union COLA contracts), and how that affects price dynamics

odd, that case is about regulating speech of foreign companies getting grants to do HIV prevention exclusively in foreign countries, the case does not touch the issue of online activity at all. Seems like with porn streaming in particular they'd often be using CDN assets stateside, at minimum

I suspect the reason the House GOP radicals are fucking around is because that's what Trump wants. Either he gets a lackey as Speaker, or he gets a gov't shutdown in an election year. Or both. But a shutdown may backfire - could halt inflation, bring rates down, inspire furloughed workers to vote

This. Trump isn't trying to win these cases, he's trying to win re-election so he can abuse Presidential power to make the cases go away. Winning election when under indictment requires building a plausible witch hunt narrative and unfortunately judicial gag orders play right into that

IMO we have experience as a society with narrow supply shocks affecting one or two basic goods, not broad based inflation. Price spikes go back down, so that's the naive expectation (exacerbated by politics of course). Inflation is also a recent memory. By next fall, it will actually feel over.

Success in big tech is a very long play. Subsidize disruptive tech with VC/institutional savings so that one's products seem almost magically useful for the price, wipe out all competition, and then cheapen the product and recoup the money. This outcome is exactly what we should've expected

He's not trying to play chess IMO. Sure he's behaving quite naturally for him, but he does have a pretty clear strategy in all of this - pure power. Act the victim, rile up the base, get elected, use power to stave off accountability. It may not be coldly calculated but there's a plain logic to it

He's not trying to win this case, or any of his cases IMO. He's just rallying his voter base to put him back in power and pressuring conservatives in the SCOTUS to undo all his troubles. He knows winning in court is both very hard and completely moot if he becomes dictator-for-life in 2025
