a note to Washington Post readers: On Dec. 7, we ask you to respect our walkout by not crossing the picket line: For 24 hours, please do not engage with any Post content. That includes our print + online news stories, podcasts, videos, games and recipes.
Glad to support this. What do you think an appropriate action for home delivery subscribers would be? A vacation stop? Just not sharing articles online?
The Post refuses to bargain a new contract in good faith and we've been trying for 18 months. So we're walking out. Help us send a message to the folks who should come to the table and bargain yesterday.
What’s so funny is I was literally contemplating today subscribing to the post and nyt etc. again for the 1st time in a while. Cut back on subs a while back but been hurting for news bc of it. I cut bigger things now and was thinking I’d resub some news 🤦♂️ well I’ll wait til I hear how this goes!
Is there an email address I can send my own letter to, to support you? I don't feel comfortable putting my personal info on forms—but more importantly, an individual letter carries more weight. I've been a subscriber for 47 years, and I'm not happy with the Post right now at all.
I hope this works out, but I’m always skeptical of the effectiveness of strikes that have a planned end date.
Sure, it shows owners that you’re united in your demands, and gives them a taste of how things will be like without you. It also shows them that they can wait you out and you’ll come back.
I put this in my calendar, because I'm horribly absent-minded. I'll also let people know on other social media. Is there anything else subscribers can do?
Disappointed but not surprised at how the negotiations are going. I’m a subscriber (hometown paper) and I will boycott everything. Let us know if there’s more you need.
Note to self: When posting press release type info, this format works better for a larger group of differently-brained people:
"On Thursday, Dec. 7, we ask you to respect our walkout ..."
Really sorry I can't get there in time to join the Progressive Workers Union support rally. I'll be there in spirit ... wearing my old News Media Guild fleece 😁
I promise this is a good faith question: I typically take "engage with" to mean "repost/comment on/link to/etc". Does the ask stop there, or does it include not READING the Post as well?
I mean, to be honest I mostly stopped reading it once Bezos bought it. It's hard to have trust in articles when it is owned by someone who got rich off of the way Amazon is run. I hope you win your terms!
Thanks for posting, this is the first I’ve heard. I was a Guild shop steward during the San Francisco newspaper strike in 1994. I’ve lately been tempted by WaPo offers to subscribe digitally but will hold off until you get a contract. (Already subscribe to 2 local print papers, online NY Times.)
Remember: the Post is a Bezos owned company. Surely he can afford what the workers are asking for.
I have a digital subscription but won’t be viewing any content on the 7th.
Count me in, though it won't be much of a problem because I've been trying to avoid WaPo since cancelling my subscription a year ago, so I guess they won't notice.
