They are so epic! I discovered so many more I didn't know about before while researching this piece. Marsupial lion?? Short faced kangaroo?? So cool. Plotting a wider feature on them one day.

I don’t know! Not so far. It seems like it’s less common for NZ books? I think they’re expensive to make and our market is so small. I’d like to do one though! I’ve been practicing my radio voice!

Yusss thanks Simon. Oh really wasn’t it? Did it let you add it manually? I wonder if it means Whitcoulls don’t stock it

You don’t have to be in New Zealand it seems! Anyone can vote. If Feijoa wins it gets to hang out in the front window of all the whitcoulls book shops which would be epic as. Thanks everyone!

Bluesky friends! Can you do me a favour? Voting closes Monday for the Whitcoulls top 100 books and I’d absolutely love it if you’d chuck a vote in for Feijoa: takes 1 minute and you go into the draw for book vouchers. Link here: www.whitcoulls.co.nz/top-100-books

In Bridgerton S.3 there’s a scene where Cressida is trying to impress the nature-loving lord with her concern for the endangered great auk. By 1850 these birds were extinct. How they went from millions to none is a wild story I wrote about here: hakaimagazine.com/news/from-he... #bridgerton 🦤🦢🦩🪽🐧

Rat eradication is a team sport. It’s not a competition – but if it were, New Zealand would be on the leaderboard. Watching one unfold on the remote Tongan island of Late last July was so fascinating: listen to my last Voice of Tangaroa podcast ep here! www.rnz.co.nz/programmes/v...

Despite the outcry, Duke University still plans to close its huge herbarium, because it doesn't want to spend $25 million to repair the collection's building. Duke's endowment was $11.6 billion as of 2022; it is also the primary beneficiary (32%) of the independent $3.69 billion Duke Endowment.

Just read this fantastic book - great writing and meticulously researched. Captures the emotional resonance of "Feijoa season" (now in full swing at mine), the political and colonial history that spread it round the world, and the biology of the plants themselves. In good bookshops near you.

This. Promising (female) talent gets preyed on, then punished for objecting or speaking out, and oftentimes leaves the industry discouraged by the total lack of accountability or learns to keep themselves small and unnoticeable for their own safety.
