I love that they had this reference art ready to go in case they needed a scene where ET runs into his ex and has to keep up a brave face when she tells him she's engaged now

More great coverage of Auckland Council - which represents 1/3 of the population of Aotearoa - drawing a line in the tarmac, in favour of safe speeds on all our streets✊❤️

The accompanying video features a shout-out to Physics: love to see evidence-based governance! 🎓 www.stuff.co.nz/nz-news/3503...

Full credit to Councillors @juliefairey.bsky.social and @hendowest.bsky.social for their amendment, beefing up support for protecting the tamariki and communities of Auckland from proposed blanket unsafe speeds. And to Councillor John Watson for his decisive casting vote: moral leadership in action!

Irihapeta and you and a few others were so quick to catch on and share the fun on NZ Twitter - it became a great time, during a hard time. 🥰 I still remember the happy buzz in the family chat as we compared strategies and daily results. All kudos to Mr Wardle the original wordler, as well!

"Butt out, Wellington" (said the Mayor of Auckland, to the Minister for Auckland, who lives in Auckland).

Also iconic: the moment when Councillor Alf Filipaina asked, “What is the problem the Government is trying to fix?” and basically the entire room shrugged. 🤷‍♀️ www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/auckland-...

In great news: heroic scenes at Auckland Council, with a near-unanimous pushback against this indefensible government overreach on local streets. 🙌 Including a strengthened response on safe speeds around schools (carried by a casting vote!). Very very grateful for the integrity on display today. 🙏🥰

Of all the baffling ideas this govt is pursuing, this one’s a doozy *even by their own lights*: a cost-benefit review of safe speed zones around schools found they’re <checks notes> 45x better for the economy than Simeon Brown’s strictly-school-gate notion!

One of my favourite things to find in the old newspapers is neat examples of design or typography. Here's an example, an old calendar for the year 1899, titled "Maramataka".

Flashback to a lovingly staged open home with wooden letters spelling out "HOME" and "LOVE"... who could resist the temptation to shuffle them to say "EMO HOVEL"? (cc @beckeleven.bsky.social!)

A huge challenge confronting those in charge of finalising the ten-year transport plan for Tāmaki Makaurau:

"threading the needle between a) what Aucklanders tell them they actually want and need, and b) what Simeon Brown (also an Aucklander) is telling them they’re permitted to do." #nzpol

This video was provided in response to one of our recent OIA requests and comes from 2018. It shows what we could have had if the previous govt hadn't been distracted by unaffordable metro schemes. More in an upcoming post.

I love how vague early gender conceptions are, like 6yo just played with a new kid at the playground & nobody was clear on gender. "I think he was a girl. I THINK." some folk frown on this kind of ambiguity (often older ppl), rush to correct, etc i'm just like, lol, who cares

My secondhand wētā story comes via the Poor Knights Islands, where the extremely enormous ones live. How giant? Approximately the size of your face - as one fellow reportedly found out in a super-tactile way. (Both parties survived the encounter.)

Her two sisters were up there with her, a little harder to spot. At one point she lay full length on the branch with her lanky legs dangling down either side. Big cats really are big cats! (A perfect view back into the playground, too.)

Went for a late afternoon bike ride; a bit too late to go to the zoo, so we wandered around the park instead. And then! As we passed the playground, a flurry of excitement and a whole lot of pointing… …and there she was, a lioness! Way up high in the branches of a tree, watching us watching her.
