My secondhand wētā story comes via the Poor Knights Islands, where the extremely enormous ones live. How giant? Approximately the size of your face - as one fellow reportedly found out in a super-tactile way. (Both parties survived the encounter.)

Her two sisters were up there with her, a little harder to spot. At one point she lay full length on the branch with her lanky legs dangling down either side. Big cats really are big cats!

Went for a late afternoon bike ride; a bit too late to go to the zoo, so we wandered around the park instead.
And then! As we passed the playground, a flurry of excitement and a whole lot of pointing…
…and there she was, a lioness! Way up high in the branches of a tree, watching us watching her.

25 July 1893 edition of Te Paki o Matariki, newspaper of the Kīngitanga. The masthead depicts Matariki & is an adaptation of the coat of arms of the Kīngitanga. ‘Te Paki o Matariki’ is also the name of a song associated with the Māori King Movement.
