Make sure you enroll in 'Medicare Primary.' Don't fall for the scam of Medicare Advantage, owned by private for-profit insurers who use the 'Medicare' name to exploit older adults. MA will deny you coverage when you get really sick & need care.
I had to utilize Medicaid (which is different. I know) but it was sooo fabulous. I wished I could just stay in it and not pay $1000/mo for insurance and pay more in copays.
I had no idea but when I turn 65 if we still have this awful health insurance system, I hope I remember this warning! (Ann even bigger wish is for our whole health insurance system to change.)
Thank you for this piece of info. I am SO DAMN TIRED of being solicited to purchase this $hit! All the information is so confusing. And to not cover dental & vision should be illegal!
Our MA is a PPO with all our doctors & specialists & local hospital, so it works perfectly for us (several years with no issues) - BUT if we move into the next county north or west of us, we'd be out-of-range & have to change.
Read the link. See your views clearly but also know how an Advantage plan had saved my butt financially. Which leaves me wondering if what state you live in plays a role. And knowing my insurance plan research is going to have to be longer this period.
So I don't disagree (or know enough about a lot of this to argue), but it's important that you also point out that trad Medicare does NOT cover prescription drugs. Part D coverage, as an
I dont know...my KPMA has worked well, but if I move out of this region it's to do all over again. Consumer Reports has this: www.consumerreports.org/money/health...
People also need to be alerted to the misleading language used by MA companies to make it sound like MA plans *add to* traditional Medicare. When they say βMedicare Part gives you benefits you might be missingβ they are leaving out that they take away your traditional Medicare.
We're union retirees. Our union decided to buy the "advantage" program for seniors. With Aetna, no less. I am very disappointed and angry, but we the retirees don't have anything to say about it. So far, so good, they covered everything for my hubs. Must be the Union exerting pressure.
I'm on an Advantage plan & so far it's been ok. The reason I chose that over primary medicare is because I didn't want to pay for the supplemental insurance when not actually using it. I recall my mom's supplemental premiums kept increasing at a steady pace. This article has me π€
If I unenroll from my MA plan to a Medicare Primary plan, I'll have to pay an additional $6000/year in out of pocket costs (premiums/dental/Rx/vision/etc. I don't have that kind of $.
Here is an unbiased and very good article about MA plans. For most people a good plan, such as Blue Advantage, saves them money. It covers A, B, D, and Medigap for the cost of Part B alone. 48% of seniors are on a MA plan. www.consumerreports.org/money/health...
Advantage plans differ from one company to another, so look at the plans themselves. Some are fine. People can choose Medicare primary, but they need Parts A, B, and D. People who are more at risk may do better with C-plus. Choosing the Medicare program that fits your needs takes a little research.
Yes!! Medicare Advantage plans have weird exclusions and sometimes high copays vs Medicare Primary. Have seen ER copays of $200 before. I feel that a lot of older adults are misled by by advertising into thinking big name insurers will have better coverage.
π―!! I'm at that age, and every day, I get deluged by Advantage calls. I'm buying Obama care coinsurance on the marketplace. I've seen Advantage plans turn down chemo and hospice. Nope!
