the purpose of a system is not what IT SAYS IT DOES or what you want it to do but what it actually does.

weird to see people daydream about how ~biden could fix this~ solving the executive authority crisis using executive authority would be disastrous, even if he were competent and liked—an "enlightened king" is still structurally a despot we need a new constitution

The Supreme Court just overthrew the country and I’m still seeing headlines that are like “did you know Joe Biden is like, months older than his opponent?”

So federal agencies can't interpret laws for the sake of enacting regulation, but they can obey wildly illegal instructions the president gives them as part of his "official responsibilities," do I have that right?

I know art discourse is usually a proxy for deeper social issues, but it's funny that the epicenter of the nepo convo is entertainment, an industry built on unmeritocratic traits like hotness, charisma, and youth hard not to wonder if the real frustration is that many nepo babies aren't lookers

low-key, age has become an ~identity~ and taken on a lot of the dumbass ideological power we give to identities ageism= systemic discrimination against older people because they are old saying an incompetent guy who happens to be old should retire is not a call to bar all elders from public life

A conversation on our Discord has prompted me to say again: remember, y'all, what really sells books is not the author talking about their work, but *readers* talking about it. Word of mouth drives far more sales than advertising or any other engine. So if you loved a book, tell your friends!

a fascinating and also sad political etymology of genocide

A federal court has found gunmaker SIG Sauer liable in the shooting of a man who claimed his P320 pistol fired when he did not pull the trigger. The second of several dozen lawsuits involving the popular handgun to go to trial, it’s the first in which a jury ruled the gun was defectively designed.

perplexes me when people wish a novel they found too unwieldy gets turned into a movie or show I get that they are asking for a "smoother" experience, since adaptation often involves streamlining but they also seem to think visual media is inherently smooth and can't itself be disorienting

I don't see any value in adding credits to books if contributors still aren't paid better. I bet most assistants, editors, designers, etc would in fact prefer money to attribution
