We live in a different world. Self publishing is not vanity publishing. It is a different animal. Many have made dazzling careers out of self publishing, like LJ Ross, careers that would turn trad authors green with envy.

Self publishing is the rock on which my writing career is built. Without it I'd be nowhere. And if an agent likes something I send them but wants to market it separate from my other work I'll just publish under a pseudonym. I'm nothing if not practical.😉

I've learnt so much about writing through self publishing, things I would never have learnt had I stuck to querying. I've worked with an excellent editor, @jesslawrence.bsky.social,
and I've come to understand what does and doesn't make a story work thanks to her feedback.

I still write other things in other genres and I still query agents. I've had no joy so far but it's just a matter of time. My writing is ten times better than it was when I found representation the last time, and that's all thanks to self publishing.

I didn't "ruin my career" by self publishing, I didn't "give up", I started my career by self publishing, and now I have four books out and a small but passionate readership who support me and my work.

I had an agent at the time I wrote Dexter & Sinister. He wasn't interested in representing it. I had a choice between shelving both it and the entire series I had planned or just getting on with it. I chose to get on with it.

Regarding self publishing; a 🧵 I self publish because I write in a genre the publishing industry is not a big fan of - steampunk. I could have kept searching for that one agent, that one publisher, who was willing to get behind my work, or I could get on with it myself. I chose to get on with it.

If people guess my ending or my plot twists, that means I’ve done a good job of writing, and they’re interested enough to pay attention. It’s a compliment! Then they get to enjoy some dramatic irony as they watch the characters unknowingly stumble right into it.

a small PSA - every author, when getting an offer, should be asking what the publisher's AI position is along with the deal terms. You may not be able to change things, but the publishers need to be made to state their LLM, narrator and artwork position ever time.

Had a go at making tamage kake gohan and I must have done something wrong because it came out all sloppy and was not very tasty. Not that I know what it should taste like but still, people say it's good so I assume it's my cooking that's wrong.

Right-To-Buy is the PERFECT example of Thatcherism eating itself. Selling council houses creates Tory voters. But they also blocked councils building more. So rather than creating a permanent production line of Tory voters, they created a finite source and then depleted it, creating social harm.

Good reporting on an entirely predictable problem. Fun fact: Airbnb also covers up thousands of sexual assaults every year! Its internal safety team has "cool-down rooms" to take a break from the trauma of what they hear. It's a bad company, a bad industry, and people should just stay in hotels.

this telescope was gifted to NASA by the NRO, which had it left over & sitting in a clean room since the late 90s (I think). What is the NRO & why do they have better telescopes than astronomers? Well, it’s a spy agency & there are 16 of these in orbit for the past 2 decades pointing down at Earth 😬
