However, my favorite CDR is and remains #RestoreNature, please on a much larger scale and after all it is the most effective so far. (removing 2 billion tons versus 1.3 million tons of CO2 per year)

many people find solar geoengineering scary (and rightly so). maybe they think, wow they didn't get away with that one method, now they've come up with a new method (like "ocean geoengineering") that's probably just as bad. they shouldn't both be called "geoengineering" 🤔

I find it really strange that there are such concerns. In Germany there was and is a wellness trend called "Entsäuerung" to improve the acid-base balance in the body. Why don't we allow the same for the oceans?

as long as we don’t consider solar geoengineering as a climate solution, absolutely yes - and we don't, right ? who will actually implement the real climate solutions ? Politicians on every continent certainly won't - they'll all go completely crazy. So civil society, smart business leaders ?

I think of marine CO₂ removal (mCDR) as techniques that reduce surface ocean pCO₂ and use the ocean surface as a contactor to draw down atmospheric CO₂. Dumping terrestrial biomass into the deep sea and injecting CO₂ into the deep sea are not mCDR.

🇪🇺 Green Deal könnte ein verbindendes Element für den Kontinent sein, wenn es um eine gemeinsame Energiepolitik und damit Sicherheits- bzw. Verteidigungspolitik geht.

thx a lot ! somehow I had initially understood that the 1st half would not be absorbed until the next century (2100-2200) because we would have restored enough forests by then or the oceans would have regained the ability to absorb it - but then I suspected that this is probably nonsense 🤭

sorry, did I understand correctly that for every ton of CO2 (whenever it is released) it takes about 1 century for the 1st half of it to be absorbed, but it takes about 400,000 years for the 2nd half to be absorbed (both related to the natural carbon cycle) ? 🙏

Well, CCS does not remove CO2 from the atmosphere unless what you are capturing is biogenic (as in BECCS). You'd need something like direct air capture, enhanced rock weathering, or ocean alkalinity enhancement.

The more I think about it, the more the term "mCDR" seems problematic. It lumps methods that would manipulate ecosystems (e.g. iron fertilization, macroalgae cultivation) with totally unrelated approaches that use the natural properties of seawater to accomplish CO2 drawdown from the atmosphere🧵 1/2

hier gibt es vom MIT noch ein "Spielfeld", wo man verschiedene Klimaszenarien ausprobieren kann ... aber die soziale Gegenwehr bei einem zu hohen Carbon Preis ist da nicht einkalkuliert ... & damit ist seine Rolle auch total überhöht hier, glaube ich

Hat schon jemand herausgefunden, ob es sich auch in Zehntel Grade auszahlt, welche Figur man am Anfang wählt ? Denn die Entscheidungen sind ja irgendwann klar & wie sollte es sonst auf so enge unterschiedliche Ergebnisse wie 1.44, 1.5, 1.42 etc. kommen ? Oder ist da noch eine Schicksalskomponente ?
