Making it off the editors desk and out for review is the second major milestone! (The first is submission). Yes, itโs a good sign! Now that Iโm on an editorial team Iโve learned that desk rejects make the acceptance rate so low, and the average turnaround so fast. Good luck!

Are you looking at an outlier? On the other end, a lot of desk rejects by the editorial team can pull the average time to decision downward.

I can't find the words to say how much I love this. Instead, my body spoke with visceral goosebumps and tears.

As a queer man with JWST wallpaper images on all my desktop and mobile devices, this gives me goosebumps and happy tears. Thank you so much!

Brooke van Velden is going to keep serving up bullshit about "so many traffic cones" but her real agenda is making it easier for bosses to send 19-year-olds into coal drifts with broken methane sensors and no escape vehicle, to understaff aged care facilities, to put meathooks through people's heads

I think of the closing moments of this book at least once a week. I need to re-read it someday because I know the book is so much more than that, but the closing image has stuck with me, and really shapes how I feel about the irreconcilabilities between fantasies and realities of "true love."

In March I heard about library music from the Middle East (I think Lebanon), composed by Charif Megarbane. This collection titled "Marzipan" was released last year by Habibi Funk, and is sooooo good. It inspired me to re-explore this mid-late 20th century genre, and led me to the KPM 1000 series.

Back in 1996, when I (briefly) lived in San Francisco, this album of library music was all the rage at the Litter Box, the best queer nightclub at the time. "Black Rite" by Mandingo was the problematic fave that brought everyone out to the dance floor.

They all have these green album covers. Lots of composers but Alan Harkshaw and Keith Mansfield were already familiar to me.

I've known about "library music" or "stock music" forever (instrumental tracks used in TV, film, radio), but I never knew there was a gigantic archive of library music under the name "KPM 1000," produced by KPM Music since (AFAICT) mid-late 1960s into a 1970s heydey, and then beyond. So fun.

I want to set out some thoughts on the awful @bmjcompany.bsky.social BMJ Public Health excess deaths article.
Commentary has focussed on media coverage, linking deaths to vaccines, but I want to discuss the article itself, which should not have been published in its current form.

Iโm debating whether to include this one on my list of 20 only because it just came out last year and hard to gauge if itโs โgreatly influencedโ me. It was also my first foray into audiobooks and I spent a nice chunk of early summer enjoying it while gardening.

How much should we invest before it really takes off? I was lukewarm on the first three episodes. I am absolutely primed to love shows like this but something hasnโt clicked yet.
