Researching why legless lizards don't have feet. (She/her) šŸ˜·

Non-snake legless lizards have afaik 0 venom and usually have extremely poor eyesight and have small teeth for cronching bugs, rather than needles for puncturing skin. And they donā€™t do the creepy jaw dislocation thing.

Yes! Thatā€™s one of my film facts! The ā€œsnakesā€ in Raiders of the Lost Ark are mostly lizards from yet another major group! Theyā€™re called sheltopusiks and theyā€™re far from dangerous. They eat bugs, eggs, and small animals, but never archaeologists.

I mean did a person write a prompt for this and then post this result or is there an ai bot on some website just spitting out random stuff?

Snakes and these guys are both types of lizards! They both had ancestors that were normal lizards with 4 legs but millions of years ago, they ditched em for the tube life. What makes a lizard a lizard is being descended from lizards, not anything to do with body parts or physical appearance.

That is very fair! Power hammers seem like a lot of fun! Iā€™d need to find one where the hammering happens below my elbow height which is about 10 inches below that point for the average power hammer user. Iā€™ll see if classes with such hammers exist in my area.

Also confession: when I first learned the Krebs cycle, my first step was looking in the periodic table to find out what NADH and FADH2 were. I got very confused. My prof just sorta skimmed over the basics and the background.

I came to believe commercial textbooks can tempt novices to become overwhelmed in details (in addition to being costly). So we cooked our own OER that anyone can remix and use for non-commercial purposes. Example single lecture unit: bioprinciples.biosci.gatech.edu/06-oxidative...

Yessss! Thatā€™s a very important aspect of education that gets overlooked. For bio especially, what students learn is useful for justā€¦living.

Would you still love me if I was a worm lizard? There are over 200 species of these strange, long friends. Most of them use their faces to burrow, are completely limbless, and have rings of scales. They are also extremely lovable! šŸŖ±šŸ¦ŽšŸ©· šŸ“øChirindia swynnertoni by Poitr Naskrecki

None of that detail stuff is memorable! Memorizing it without an appreciation of how it fits into a larger story about evolution, physiology, ecology or something, is a waste of time. Non-major microbio should be learning how cells make tissues and looking at cheek cells under a microscope.

Thatā€™s already on my list! Iā€™ve been doing evo bio for like a decade and Iā€™m still mad I had to learn the Krebs cycle. I appreciate it now cause the different ways organisms produce ATP really explain how eukaryotes were able to take off and diversify, but that shouldnā€™t be in anyoneā€™s intro.

I feel that! Thereā€™s so much to learn and so little time! Iā€™m starting to explore curriculum development cause Iā€™m pretty sure a lack of critical thinking is behind *gestures at all of the problems* Honestly, Iā€™d rather have everyone take a basic philosophy class than even a basic biology class.

THANK YOU! As far as I can tell, people donā€™t like him because heā€™s very confident for someone with a kind of annoying voice. Like are yā€™all trying to full cancel someone for racism cause the cast of the movie version of his musical isnā€™t exactly representative of the community itā€™s depicting?

If you are stung, grab some cellophane/Scotch tape to remove the residual stingers as quickly as possible, wash with soap and water. Monitor a patient closely for changes in mental status, seek medical care as quickly as possible.

Board game design (and general) mentorship advice: I know a middle-aged dude assigned to mentor two young women designing games. He thoughtfully asked if I had any advice, wondering about blind spots. I posed his Q to a group of women and I thought they had some really good advice. šŸ§µšŸ‘‡ šŸŽ²āœ‚ļø

WTF. The electric company in Texas doesn't have a map of outages so people have been using the Whataburger App to figure out who lost power. This is like when Homer was using the Krusty Burger map when they got lost at sea.

I think they did it to be funny. I donā€™t know why youā€™d use your car as a joke, but itā€™s like wearing those 80s glasses with the bar across the top. Itā€™s a throwback to what has been universally considered a bad style choice in earnest but is fun when done semi-ironically.

Greenland sharks are the longest-living vertebrates known, with some likely reaching 500 years old. They don't even reach sexual maturity until age 150. I'll save the secret of their longevity for another time, though. I want to talk about how we KNOW they're a half-millennium old.

Same! My husband is one of the smartest people Iā€™ve ever met and Iā€™ve worked with MDs and PhDs for about a decade now. He made me feel stupid once after he tried teaching me magic the gathering. I told him how I felt and heā€™s never done it again in 11 years. Quite the opposite in fact.
