An important 1982 lecture by Grace Hopper is stored on tape in a vault at the NSA

MuckRock filed a FOIA request to get a copy of the lecture

Three years later, the NSA said they could not read the 1982 tape format, and sent back a photocopy of the tape reel 🙃

What? No it wasn't. A bunch of people warned about exactly this, before it happened, and then AS IT WAS HAPPENING. People just… kept pretending that the dude who conned them hadn't conned them and was, in fact, a super genius, instead of taking the fucking L and holding him anything like accountable

We were told to expect this regarding water in German restaurants forty years ago. How is it still surprising people?

The Chicken Ranch, which served American-style fried chicken was the only restaurant I recall serving ice in drinks while living there.

It's almost like we have decades upon decades of data telling us that debates don't matter to the outcome of presidential elections and all the Democrats and progressives panicking for weeks IN PUBLIC were only doing the GOP's work for them. 🤡

This is such bullshit, and a perfect example of the politically-driven “gotcha“ agenda of right-wing media. No officials outside of the White House can instantly call the president. Everything goes through the staff, in this case on the National Security Council and the White House Military Office.

A reminder that if Trump wins & purges the civil service to replace it with loyalists as planned, all sorts of govt data will become totally untrustworthy. The House GOP is already trying to rig the census to screw Democrats in redistricting after Trump's first-term attempt failed

So I want to talk about this from the perspective of someone who does professional fact checking as part of my work. For some years now I have been paid to check TV and written content themed around animals to make sure it is factually accurate. Chat GPT & AI has made that job so much harder.

Some editors might think it useful to point out the author clerked for one current and one former Supreme Court Justice, both Republican appointees (Kavanaugh, when he was on the DC Circuit, and Kennedy). But those editors do not work at the Washington Post.

Beloved Apple blog TUAW was shut down in 2015, sold to private equity, then sold to a company in Hong Kong. It recently relaunched as an AI content farm using the stolen identities and bylines of its former human staff. A nightmare:

Seven times between 1801 and 1869 Congress changed the size of the court, going from a low of five justices in 1801 to a high of ten in 1863. In most of those cases, as in 1801 and 1863, the size went up and down in order to fix an imbalance or overreach by the Supreme Court. My latest

Criticizing journalists is not only not illiberal, it's necessary. Arguing that the press shouldn't exist or should be restrained by the state (which is the Trumpian position) is illiberal.
