Even before mask bans become law, simply the act of politicians speaking about mask wearers as criminals is stigmatizing a critical public health tool, and encouraging harassment of marginalized groups. That is incredibly reckless and making our cities more unsafe.

I can think of the use of condoms as evidence of prostitution for the NYPD as another big example of criminalizing a public health tool -- especially for trans women with already high HIV rates. I'm sure there are many other examples!
