Absolutely infuriating that we have no infrastructure to notify the population of these trends. City public health departments should be monitoring local wastewater and sending alerts to the entire population when it crosses a specific threshold.

Unsure if you mean food microbiology or microbiology demo using food… We do DNA construction and a few painstaking rounds of manual PCR using Twizzlers and gummy bears. Plus DNA extraction from strawberries using kitchen items

You could culture some sliced store bought cranberries on some petri dishes filled with nutritional media. Identify what grows after a week. Talk about how fungi are everywhere - even inside fruit (endosymbionts). Ask students why they think this symbiosis evolved.

Another point about the journal "Applied and Environmental Microbiology" - if you review more than 5 papers a year - you'll be automatically considered for the editorial board after a few years - early career folks at #ASMicrobe make sure we know who you are - there's a quick path to recognition!

#microbiomesky #microsky what are y'all using for biofilm quantification on a surface? We've been doing crystal violet bc that's what I've always done, but I'm looking at safranin staining. I swear there were papers on staining the sugars and proteins in biofilms, but I'm not finding them. TIA! 🧫🧪🦠
