Folks, I am doing a study on authors and their views on AI as part of my dayjob. If you are a fiction author then I would love to see you participate! Full recruitment letter & link are below, threaded.
I'm sure those links are fine, but I'm also Gen X, with boomer parents and Silent Gen grandparents, so I'm unsure where you're wanting to take this conversation?
I don't think any Hollywood actor would've been allowed fully naked without a C-string in a non-closed off public situation. It seems like an insurance disaster
Which is obviously much worse than the situation now when his crotch will be photoshopped into Elder Horrors
We fired a bunch of the people making our products [wild cheers from investors] and in the coming year we are going to have products made with a new process we're calling "magic" [investors start screaming and throwing their Platinum cards around]
Tbh, it's slightly less than I was expecting. Which speaks more about the general price of artist supplies rather than me having too much money on me 🥲
THIS.
"Boycotting" an election doesn't send the message that you're unhappy, because it doesn't lose them money like it would for a business. You're not the nation's customer.
Refusing to vote sends the message that you're fine with whatever result you get, that other people can decide for you.
Now open to submissions, “The Year’s Best Arthropod Short Fiction Volume 1.”
Why…? WHY NOT!
Submit your previously published (in 2023) stories for consideration before April 2nd!

Even if for some reason you don’t think generative AI is copyright theft, or don’t care about the industries it disrupts and jobs it destroys, or aren’t bothered by the very low quality of what it actually produces, its environmental impact alone should be enough to quit using it.
For whoever needs to hear it today: taking precautions to avoid catching covid does NOT make you an "anxious" person!! It's not unreasonable to want to keep yourself/others healthy! Anyone who says you're a burden or should "compromise" by putting yourself at risk should go kick rocks for eternity.
so funny when conservatives get riled at stephen king and try pretending hes irrelevant. hes literally one of most successful writers in human history and theyre like 'try havin an opinion once you find some success mr king now back to my podcast on freedomgoof dot biz dot truth'
I do understand the itch to peek what the readers are saying. What artist wouldn't want to know? But like... it's kind of like trying on clothes in the store dressing room: you're only going to get a distorted view with bad lighting, even on a good day. Don't do it unless you're secure in your work
My default startled interaction is some kind of a threat to the other person's life, in a jovial tone.
Then the quick realization we don't know each other like that, followed by spontaneous combustion.
I "love" spending a LOT of time not communicating with other people with my vocal cords (or like, at all), so that when I finally do get into a communication situation, I have no idea how to human anymore, and will just default to being a horror
So: I'm sorry if you had to experience that
ICYDK: @scottmccloud.bsky.social's "Understanding Comics" is free to read on the Internet Archive. You should absolutely read it, and let it change the way you look at the art form, especially if you make comics, or aspire to make comics.
It's sad that I'm delighted when I hear a company is willing to wait like 5 seconds to read about a thing someone is gassing them up about before physically jumping om board.
It seems like that would be the bare minimum for a business to do. And yet...
maybe just reverse the crucifixions? Everyone but Jesus gets it. Then no one can claim it's "too woke" (or whatever the hell their brainworms tell them to post on Twitter)
Yes, translators are independent artists and literary creatives. When you name the writer and illustrator of a translated book, please don't forget to #NameTheTranslator
God I wish people would just learn to say "I was wrong and misinformed, and I went and spouted opinions when I could've just at down and listened."
Am I asking too much? Like it literally costs nothing to not speak on things you don't understand well enough
Also speaks volumes when people look forward to retiring, then when they do, they dive head first into alcoholism and cantankerous HOA fuckery to alleviate loneliness
(2/2) with having a single employer/career your entire life as was the goal with Silent Gen and Baby Boomers. There was also significantly less time dedicated to life that was outside of work or family. Those older generations, for various reasons, just didn't make friends the same way newer ones do
Many younger people may have adopted the mindset of hustling because it gives the illusion of having control over your life (when all else seems out of your control), however, that's not what my post was referring to.
Tying your entire life into your work life IS generational, and coincides (1/2)
They're just goofing around. They're a silly bunch like that. Silly silly bunch of big goofs larking around and swaying visibly when asked to stand still. For fun!
Certain older generations continuing to prove they don't know how to have a life outside of work, and don't know how to develop and maintain friendships outside of compulsive traumatic group settings
Hey, remember MOOCs? Remember "the year of the MOOC?" Remember how UVA's board tried to fire the president because she wasn't sufficiently hyped about MOOCs? Remember how Sebastian Thrun (Udacity) said there would eventually be only 10 higher-ed outlets bc of MOOCs?
Just thought I'd ask.
