There's no universe in which this should be the responsibility of the person receiving the calls.

Silver lining: I appreciate living in a universe where legit contacts and friends donβt expect me to ever answer the phone.

Actually, I disagree (sorta). Any technology tool, enforcement mechanism/screening put in place will be defeated by the scammers. Nothing can replace human awareness so education/critical thinking is essential. The very first step is to give yourself time to "think". Let it go to voicemail!

FCC and FTC need to do their damn jobs. Crack down on number spoofing, and regulate toll free numbers and who gets them better.

It actually goes deeper than that. We can have a functioning infrastructure/technology or not. The spammers prevent us from having useful phone technology. The government could make sure that didnβt happen.

It seems crazy to me that telephones and SMS are totally broken, and the only solution is "don't use them."

I now choose to make them regret calling me, lol. With unlimited data, texts, and time compared to them, I've gotten less calls due to shutting them down/wasting their time than I did ignoring them.

I'd rather get a spam call than suffer the agony of voicemail. But these are not mutually exclusive; one can refuse to take phone calls AND refuse to use voicemail. Don't call me. I'm not going to answer. I'm not going to listen to voicemail.

This is from a few years ago but I think about it every time I see something like this. This guy was so used to getting spam call after spam call that he didnβt even know there were rescuers looking for him.

I used to get 20 or 30 scam calls every week. I bought a call blocker which has a load of known scam numbers already in it and a button on the top which I can hit if a scam calls gets through and which immediately ends the call and adds that number to the block list. Now I get 1 every 6 months.

They can track my phone for billing all over the world, down to the penny regardless of time zone yet when it comes to scam calls, who know?!?! It's all a dark mystery that no one is in charge of!
