This is one of the most dystopian signs I've ever seen. Republicans are quickly turning this country into an unrecognizable freakshow.

i have largely stopped arguing about this on social media because it isn’t fruitful, but this finding gets to why you should be skeptical of theories that try to sideline or excise race from an explanation of the white rural turn toward reactionary politics news.cornell.edu/stories/2024...

Gambling is causing an occupational health and safety crisis for athletic workers and the leagues they work for and sports media complex are entirely responsible because, as always, in capitalism value comes first and the worker might as well be dead at the end of the day.

I’m extremely wary of this wave of uncritically cheering deregulation. “Permitting reform” “regulatory stranglehold” etc. What are the proposed changes and who will bear the impact? Who is in support? I’m not opposed to reform, but this narrative that the regulatory state is on par with Big Oil? No.

this point is often brought up to (deservedly) dunk on the Democratic party. but IMO what this actually points to is the political autonomy and increasing lawlessness of policing and police forces in this country - the solution to which is probably not billions more dollars

there’s a powerful set of educated but out-of-touch liberals who still don’t quite grasp (1) how far the conservative base has drifted into radicalism and (2) how close most “educated” conservatives are to that base

It's very easy to spot folks who will use climate language but have zero interest in the actual political project of ending climate change "for everyone" when they belittle and exclude people fighting for those same goals in the present.

i think the spread of news and images from gaza has led to the younger generation seeing less moral distance between, i.e., non-state terrorism and state violence. it's not that they're all embracing hamas - they are seeing mass state violence with a moral clarity that political elites don't

The very real way American society has gone soft is an inability to tolerate levels of tension generations past would have laughed at. A country as diverse & (putatively) free as we are will be fractious. If you say things like 'trying Trump will rip us apart' you shouldn't be in charge of anything.

losing my mind over the constant shifting from evaluating causes to evaluating people fighting for them. If someone proved every single ceasefire protestor was an anti-Semite that cheats on their exams, romantic partners, and taxes, what would we learn about whether or not to support IDF bombs?

A lot of people look at the implacable and irrational unpersuadability of antivaxxers and kinda conclude "ah there's nothing we can do except let them win" instead of the correct conclusion that we need to force them to get their kids vaccinated against their parents' will

It frustrates me to no end when people point to public opinion as the reason we have various political outcomes. It's ridiculous. But folks will say 'well the public wants militarized borders' as an explanation for why politicians want to enact draconian immigration policies.

The Constitutional Crisis is already here. You've been living in it since (at least) the 2000 recount. It cannot be averted, and thus reset US government to the midcentury bipartisan consensus, but it can be won or lost.
