The 16th Amendment was a landmark victory of progressive reform. It affirmed Congress' sweeping authority to tax the wealthy as it saw fit.

If most of the Supreme Court justices are Originalist, how can they justify their own legitimacy to serve on the Supreme Court? In the 18th century, could women, people of color, or even Catholics been allowed by law such positions of power? I'm not asking rhetorically. I'm legit asking.

I'm an idiot but wouldn't securing loans based on the unrealized income of, say, shares, count as "income"?

This was well worth reading. Great history on the Constitution, taxation, Supreme Court tax cases from 1895, 1920, and today, the original Progressive reformer Era, and the New Deal. Always thought monied interests were fighting taxation since The New Deal, but it's been much longer. Thanks

Thomas' dissent shamelessly misrepresents the historical record in service of plutocratic aims, whitewashing the original Constitution's accommodation of slavery while writing off the 16th Amendment as a mere "narrow" tweak. His narrative is just not true! slate.com/news-and-pol...
