The Forever War by Joe Haldeman is brilliant. I cannot believe this book is 50 years old! Drones, Bluetooth communications, tap credit card withdrawal and deposit, changes in languages, customs, and social mores. It resonates today!

Doing our best to fix it, one day at a time. I need these insights to keep my eyes open and hold my team accountable. What’s bothered me is how I’ve had to raise my voice in a strongly worded “Knock it off” when NCOs heard the same egregious comments and should have said the same thing.

That brings up another point about personalities and influences who say such divisive things while serving in the USAR or NG. Troubling.

I’m interested to hear more. My experience has been… well I guess for each person it is different. I’m lighter skinned and hear a lot more things said around me because people don’t realize (or more likely don’t care). 🤷🏽‍♂️ Overall, I’ve seen the best in people but also some aggressive racism.

Similar experience here. No incidents at Fort Johnson, but more than a couple run-ins with racism in upstate SC and around Fort Liberty. Pulled up next to a truck with a WHITE POWER WORLDWIDE (and other regalia on it) in SC. That was a tense traffic light.

#milsky this is anecdotal based off limited internet searches but there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot written about command and leadership in recruiting or basic training units.
