This would be a huge boon for scholars, too. Authors don't really create genres, exactly, at least not to the extent that acquisitions editors do.

On brainwashing, by the way, I recommend this great lecture from 2015: youtu.be/KmxkU826x0I?... about how the CCP basically abandoned intensive reeducation, but how it captured the American imagination anyway.

This is exactly my experience. I don't teach about Gaza or Israel (not in my area) but students talk about it to me. I've met anti-encampment/anti-protest students, but the student body overwhelmingly supports Palestine in person and in digital spaces. I'm learning from them on this, not vice versa.

#BOTD: Liu Bannong 劉半農 (1891–1934), author, linguist, and translator of Sherlock Holmes in #ModernChina. A pioneer of vernacular 白話 poetry, simplified characters 简体字, and photography, he coined the distinction of masculine 他, feminine 她, and neuter 它 (all 'tā' in MSC).

I bet it was great (I would sign up if I could!) but I think some overlap between lucidity and fugue makes for awesome teaching. Or at least I hope so. If not, my students sadly don't have the 'advance ten seconds' button to mash repeatedly in case of emergency...

That gives more concepts. My students are expected to recognize it but don’t have to use it to read literature or texts, soo can cheat. Contemporary Anglo versions I don’t think emphasize the birth cycle, just rock-paper-scissors back and forth.

I don’t ever have to do the details, so this might not be enough, but I show the chart of Pokémon type interactions, the back of a Magic: the Gathering card, and if there’s space on the slide a bit of the new age elemental tarot. Then I explain it and it’s still weird but no longer crazy.

Was chatting with my brother about reading poems for the Ithaca library fundraiser, and he was like "why don't you read your poems?" I said "well, the library probably doesn't have any." He just raised an eyebrow. Master bibliographer, that guy. www.youtube.com/watch?v=-iWf...

Guerrilla reading in the library stacks, today a bilingual reading of Liu Xiaobo's "A Small Rat in Prison," tr. Jeffrey Yang. A security door cachunked behind me right at my favorite line of the translation: "A very gentryman, the mouse tonight..." so I read it 2x. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENTT...

_Sigwa_ contains a reprint of my essay "Six Proposals for the Reform of Literature in the Age of Climate Change," originally published in the Critical Flame (criticalflame.org/six-proposal... ). It is humbling to watch engaged creators react to, challenge and upend the essay!

Ecstatic over the long-awaited release of _Sigwa: Climate Fiction Anthology from the Philippines_. A hard-fought activist publication: in 2016 a climate defender died in the Philippines every twelve days. You can register (simple, nonintrusive) for a free PDF here: www.pup.edu.ph/research/ric...

From Lisa L. Moore, U of Texas: "The chilling effect is real. In the wake of SB17, the Texas anti-DEI legislation, a lecture with word "queer" in the title is cancelled at UT. My friend Lauren Gutterman and I wrote this piece because we need to put these assaults on freedom on the record."

What I'd add is that Heidegger's specific methodology is also palingenetic, arguing the (intellectual) purity and superiority of a mythic past. This kind of thinking is not limited to, but is endemic in fascist cultures, a sort of "make Germany Greek again." It can play a similar role in China.

I love this Humanities Seed Bank episode and recommend it to people who do Chinese cultural+literary study: character retention+the classical/modern divide in Chinese make Heidegerrian etymological argumentation super tempting and common. humanitiesseedbank.substack.com/p/jd-connor-...

“Close reading” a poem just means inventing new ways to see it, which (for me anyway) usually means a lot of counting & lists & unraveling of syntax. Up till the wee hours the other night w/ this marvel from Diane Seuss’s frank: sonnets. Result here: garthgreenwell.substack.com/p/what-makes...
