Ok, so Troy is pretty compelling in the scene where he tells Lainey he loves her, but at least half of that is good lighting. You know that dude would smell bad in real life. All unwashed and cigarettey.

Now to do dishes while watching Reality Bites. Iβve watched it enough as an adult to have gotten over how I disagree with my middle-school selfβs perception that Troy was dreamy and Michael was gross. The first time I rewatched it, I was shocked.

Oh, and I have zero proof of this but have been convinced for ages that the third movie helped popularize steampunk aesthetic in a big way.

The second film is solid; not perfect, but genuinely good. The third is better if you treat it as campβat the very least, itβs clear to me that everyone involved knew it was ridiculous and was having a good time.

A lot of folks were probably reminded that Michael J. Fox has great comedic timing and was really good at physical comedy by his recent documentary, and all that is on display in the Back to the Future movies.

A hill I will die on is that the first movie is legitimately well made. That long opening shot? Perfection.

Random, the Back to the Future trilogy is now in Netflix and is absolutely worth checking out if youβve never seen it or havenβt seen it in years. Naturally, I own the 25th Anniversary box set on blue ray, but stream it if you donβt own it and have Netflix.

The governors of a dozen Republican-led states β AL, AK, FL, GA, IA, MS, OK, SC, SD, TX, UT, WY β opted out of a new federal food assistance program, leaving about 9.5 million students without the aid this summer

The opting out is especially wild Like, Republican governors are being actively presented with money to feed kids and affirmatively saying 'I would like children to starve actually' (Also, if I'm a Dem campaigner, I'm making some ads and placing some op eds about this immediately)

When my kids napped, mentioning it didnβt set them off; we were lucky, I guess. The daycare was the best at getting kids to sleepβif you walked in during nap time, all the kids were asleep, precisely on schedule.

Still banning Black history, I see. βThe latest version of the college prep course piloted at three Harford high schools was rejected by the school board last week in 5-4 vote, with some members calling it divisive, with a progressive agenda and too much focus on racism.β

Yikes. I havenβt read the books, but the section of the show where the plot was engaging with the history of slavery in the US South got reeeeeal messy.

Iβm far from an expert on this, but it seems like thereβs a significant racism problem in art museums both in terms of what art they deem worth collecting, and especially in hiring and retaining curators of color, particularly Black curators.

Iβm going to share an opinion: It kind of irks me that fairly often when I share an article drawing attention to a clear and present danger, thereβs a tendency on here to focus on how the article was written rather than the danger itself. I get it, so many norms in journalism reify power. BUTβ

I have done little traveling, but the essays in which James Baldwin writes about Paris, simultaneously recognizing that his experiences of freedomβrelative to the US,of courseβarenβt the same as those of Africans there have always stayed with me. Encounter on the Seine, I think?

The United States has always been a democracy for some and a brutal authoritarian regime for others, and the effort to expand it to democracy for all has led to a 70+ year backlash culminating in SCOTUS claiming that kings are totes cool and also judges are the ones to coronate them

Iβm rewatching Independence Day, which I saw in the theater when it was released. I forgot what a stacked cast it has. Ridiculous plot, quick pacing, special effects, decent script. Template for a blockbuster, really.

Well, I also think people really like that idea of meritocracy when it means history suggests people like them have more merit than everybody else. Overrepresentation in elite spaces becomes evidence of superiority. Itβs hard to convince them to give that up.

this entire crusade against diversity in hiring and admissions is based on the supposition that all white men are necessarily more qualified than any nonwhite person or woman who might be considered for the job. like, this lawsuit more or less states that outright.

A few years ago, Jon Lovett floated a theory that media treats Democrats like protagonists - to be challenged, accounted, and forced to be behave in growth-oriented ways - while the GOP are treated like antagonists - immutable, expected to disrupt, thematic obstacles. Thinking about that a lot.
