If this happens, it cannot be undone 4 year later. It will take decades, if not centuries to undo, if at all. I don't think people understand this.

Just look at how many people still sport the Confederate flag. That shit was a WHILE ago, but still alive and well in 2024. My bet will be on "if at all".

“If at all” seems optimistic. I can’t see a path back.

Because, of course, one of the first steps will be to make sure there is no 4 years later.

It's already going to take decades to undo what the Trump courts have done and are continuing to do every day.

Yep. The fall of the Republic, in an instant. Whatever the next thing is will be a matter of building up again, from rubble

Isn’t a version of this happening in our country? Look at all the red states

Time says elsewhere in the column that a free press will help slow his roll. They're utterly whistling past the graveyard. He'll throw reporters in jail, and our recumbent Scotus Six won't do a lick to reverse that.

It’s four years later, and we’re still trying to address some of the damage from last time.

And even if he doesn’t win, we’re still going to be waiting decades to undo what he and McConnell did to the federal judiciary. Even in the wake of Dobbs and other ongoing cases, I don’t think enough people appreciate just how bad it already is.

He also now knows there are no consequences for his actions. That added with his Supreme Court full of partisan hacks that will do whatever he tells them to guarantees a second term for him will destroy this country.

BEST case scenario is Chile, where they got democracy back after 17 years. Victor Jara cannot be un-murdered, of course.

Absolutely unhinged to look at what's happening at colleges like Columbia right now and think the trouble isn't here yet

My concern is that there are those who DO understand it AND want it to happen. Because they think burning it all down will lead to a utopia rising from the ashes, no matter how many will be burned to create that ash pile.

Hell, if it happens, there'll BE no "four years later": certainly not electorally, and quite possibly in terms of the existence of humanity.

It won't take that long. If he's allowed to take power in violation of the 14th amendment, it will mean the US is already over. We'd have to build something to replace it a lot more quickly than that.
