There’s a common story that, loosely speaking, the replication crisis occurs when publication bias and questionable research practices fill the literature with false positives. That story motivates a lot of science reform efforts — and it’s wrong. A thread on our new preprint:

The replication crisis is often described as a crisis of false positives, but is it?

In our (re)new(ed) preprint, we show that false positives do not explain the replication crisis, and that varying rep. rates are often explained by replication sample size. #metascience

New Dutch hard right wing government taking a hammer to higher ed… It looks like an up to 1 billion euro (8/10%?) budget cut across science and education side of the business. Most onerous is the direct reversal of a program that’s just put 1200 talented scientists in a permanent jobs.

Arriving at work, the first thing I see is a group of Scottish football supporters in full attire, including kilts. The second thing is an article acceptance message. Excellent start to the day.

Not a lot. New teams/collectives (both formal & informal), new concepts (not too many, I'm happy using other people's work). Mostly names & labels in the context of big funding applications where names & acronyms have to overlap in a meaningful yet loose) sense. But still more than I can remember.

It is a bit confusing that the federation of european nutrition societies and the federation of european neuroscience societies are both FENS and both use #FENS2024 for their annual conferences. Luckily they are not happening simultaneously.

Scholars name concepts and theories as part of their job. Many professionals name tools, objects, instruments in their working life, from the tangible (the oscillating sander) to the virtual (code, ideas). 2/2

Professional baby namers are rare, I'd wager, compared to other professional naming work. In marketing, one names brands, products, etc. for a living. Scientists name species, genes, materials, elements, celestial objects etc. for a living (some individually, some via committee). 1/

Or can it be? Science is above all else an institution, not merely a collection of people, facts and theories. Reducing science to a process, strips it from its cultural power. That cultural power needs maintenance - for instance through certification. 2/2

If we follow Merton and view science as the practice of extending certified knowledge, then the certification has to come from somewhere. Publication is *a* way to achieve certification, but others are imaginable. Is science science without certification? 1/

Efficiency, however, is a problematic target for science, since it presupposes that we know where to go, know what progress is and where to find it. Since we don't (and spend our time disagreeing on it, for good reasons), efficiency becomes meaningless: journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1... 2/2

Underpinning the immoralisation of the file drawer is the expectation (or hope, for some), that science can be made more/fully efficient - in the neoliberal sense, where inefficiently is a cardinal sin. Honestly, this view fuels a lot of open science and scientific reform. 1/2

I'm flabbergasted by the assertion that unpublished research necessarily constitutes "waste". Peer review exists (in theory) to delineate research that is of sufficient quality to publish. If a researcher applies this filter to their own work, how is that waste?

Once the self is placed outside of inquiry, it cannot be questioned and it cannot be wrong. Under the label of "bias", the subconscious self may re-enter the domain of inquiry. The conscious self, however, continues to evade scrutiny. We are all "perfectly rational" all the time, after all...
