*Another* weird planet has been found?

Kinda makes you wonder if maybe we're the weird ones.

We're more than just weird if the rest of the cosmos ghosts us because much of our civilization is still predicated on lies that enable violence.

Can't believe there is somewhere more dense than us.

What gets me is that really high density. It's a ball of metal, and not in the astronomer's sense of the word!

Given the sheer number of planets out there, and the law of big numbers, "Weird" planets should be common enough to see... just not common enough to repeat their weirdness.

What if we are the pinnacle of all evolution everywhere every when and this comment will get me the Nobel Peace Prize because we all realize we're so important we should never hurt each other again or be greedy

I'm starting to think that *every* planet is weird, once you look closely enough.

Great news - the less paradoxical the Fermi Paradox becomes, the more likely it is that we're on the fun side of the Filter.

Would a base just a little way into the dark side of the terminator be temperate enough for humans with reasonable protection? Or is it still too extreme even then?

Dunno about the "oxygen is a metal" perspective, but Earth is incredibly weird in terms of planetary geology. Huge iron-nickel core, very large tidally locked satellite...and it got that way from an early massive impact? To say nothing of plate tectonics! Absolutely bizarre.

"There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened."

I can't remember who said it, but this always reminds me of "not only is the universe weirder than we imagine, it's weirder than we *can* imagine"

"Turtles all the way down" is true. The universe is the meat in a turtle sandwich. Weirdness is inherent and why I live in Portland.

how much of this is down to our detection techniques? hot jupiters and their ilk seem to be more noticeable than terrestrial planets further out

No shit were the weird ones. Have you heard the odds of a planet being able to inhabit life? It’s one in, like, a trillion or something. And don’t get me started on a planet hosting intelligent life, that has to be even lower. It’s a scientific and mathematical miracle that we’re all alive.
