People really need to give up the idea there's any connection between morality and art. Immoral people are capable of creating moving, empathetic art. Nothing about writing dark and violent art implies the artist is themselves dark and violent. Etc. There just isn't a connection.

I had a dear friend explicitly tell me "I'm going to disappear for a bit, please keep writing regularly anyway" and after a year of silence I was so consumed by anxiety that I stopped, how on earth does somebody power through five years with a stranger. I need to examine this man like a bug.

Advanced reader copy, they go out to critics in the months before release. Has some watermarks etc that say DON'T POST SPECIFIC DETAILS FROM THIS BEFORE THE REAL DATE. It's really just the book, early, with some markings on it showing it's not a release copy.

I think I first read it in the middle of the early/mid 2010s wave of Lynch/Rothfuss/Ambercrombie etc and the darkness blended into the zeitgeist more, but it really stands out in our current SF/F era not just as notably dark and strange but by being really really REALLY good at it

I'm re-reading Book of the New Sun for the first time in years and I'm struck by how like ... it precedes what we'd call 'grimdark' by decades but it's also a golden example of how to do it right, it's this huge grim opera but the PEOPLE feel real, it's a miserable world that real humans inhabit
