when you vote for President you are voting for a coalition rather than a person. the right understands this very well, which is why evangelicals lined up behind Trump.

I would argue that evangelical morals are in fact Trump's morals, it wasn't a sacrifice on their part. But the coalition imperative did give them the space to come around fully to this realization

It's honestly a little weird that former Republicans don't quite grasp that.

And the left doesn't understand, which is why we get people who don't understand the hypocrisy of evangelicals voting a man with Trump's character

I'd go even further and say the right is weaponizing the left's failure to understand this by coalescing around the very flawed Trump while seeking to magnify Biden's much lesser flaws.

But Trump is also the clearest example that you are very much voting for a person as well

The right lines up behind a coalition because there's a coalition that actually represents and works toward achieving rightwing interests. There simply is no such coalition for the left in American politics. The Democrats are neither leftwing nor a coherent coalition that works towards anything.

That's not how swing voters think at all.

I'm also voting for the type of officials that president might appoint: are they gonna be buddies of his who are looking to profit, or buddies of his who actually know their stuff?

Democrats aren’t coalition builders. They just tell their voters to keep eating shit, so they don’t have to eat more shit under Republicans.

I think the challenge that a lot of people have is that a bunch of us tend to collapse the coalition at a moments notice. The whole "Do Something" vibe has to be premised on not recognizing distinct groups with their own, independent, power

Tbh I would say the stronger example of this is lining up behind Romney, which was a further ideological & sociocultural leap for most GOP Christian base than Trump is

This is obviously true, but not sure about that second part. Evangelicals find him personally aspirational
