colour later on there were some questionable ones but the original one was definitely Good actually even the one before the first Discworld book (Strata) wasn't a terrible Discworld book

I'd argue that in the first half-dozen Wyrd Sisters is the first one that's actually what would come to be known as a Discworld book. The ones before that are still finding their style.

Equal Rites, though with the caveat that Colour of Magic / The Light Fantastic are good books, just written before Pratchett knew what he wanted to do with Discworld

I'd probably go for Mort, personally, but decent argument for about 5 books from Colour of Magic to Guards! Guards! depending on your threshold of "good"

The Colour of Magic. I remember seeing guides to reading order all warning people away from starting with it, and I thought they smelled overcautious about not hooking new fans, so I tried it and liked it pretty well. I then read the first . . . 6 or 7, in publishing order? Liked them all.

Guards! Guards! is the first "holy crap Pratchett is a genius" one. Mort is probably the first one that crosses the worth-reading bar in its own right.

chronologically, Small Gods in release order, probably Guards! Guards! (but I would be willing to give Mort a pass)
