For some years, my former colleagues on the right tried to argue that I had brain worms if I would break a friendship or even a close relationship over Trumpism.
I replaced "trump" with "david duke" and asked them to reconsider.
That usually ended the discussions.
Thank you, Tom, for your bluntness. More people need to realize this—I broke friendships and family relationships over TFG. One good glimmer of hope is a brother who took down his flags. I might try the David Duke replacement.
One of the things that pleases me most is that nobody I know is willing to support Trump where I can see it. It's a bit like how I apparently produce some sort of anti-cursing pheromone; they may vote for him and they may support him in the presence of like-minded folks, but never in front of me.
I’ve said it before, but I voted against David Duke in 1991 and long believed it would be the most meaningful vote I would ever cast.
I am so, so sorry to have been wrong about that
It's like how they tell liberal women they should ignore the politics of conservative men. If I'm being told to ignore someone's politics that means their politics suck.
I haven't broken family ties directly but by speaking out consistently against Trump and Trump's actions, I have had family members stop speaking to me. I don't demonize them or hate them but I make it clear that I think they are wrong in supporting Trump.
They place "loyalty" over everything else, speaking as though Trump himself would be personally disappointed in them if they falter even for a moment.
This is why Hunter Biden drives them nuts - they figure Joe MUST be loyal to his kid, so therefore there must be shenanigans going on to protect him.
I won't vote for anyone who runs as a Republican at any level. "But Melissa, the local candidates have nothing to do with the national agenda." True, but they're willingly running with a swastika next to their names.
I had some real struggles with people who still supported GWB circa 2004. They still thought things were going ok & we'd leave with a functional democracy by the end of a 2nd term.
There's a difference between bad information & bad values.
