Aye. Disney movies often carried a message of "awful things can happen to you, but you *will* survive and and you *will* be okay in the end", a tough but sometimes useful thing to tell kids. Ren & Stimpy was just fucked up for its own sake.

End of the day, it's just tribal affiliation. "I am a member of the tribe that despises pineapple pizza" can be just as strong a sense of identity as being a member of the tribe that cheers Team X or the tribe that lives on This Side Of The River. And makes as little sense.
