people forget that the military specifically targets poor kids for recruitment, using benefits/stability as a big draw, and therefore you have a lot of people in the military who would not otherwise choose to be there
and of course there are people who will moralize that decision by saying that folks don’t have a right to live comfortably through that route, but I just also don’t believe that folks born into situations they cannot control should be forced to suffer to ensure their morality remains pure
There’s a similar albeit different principle with firefighting and EMTs where it’s often a path out of poverty, which in part explains why they hate cops so much. The other part is because they have to deal with cops all the fucking time
Wife’s best friend’s husband checks this box. The Marines are basically the family he didn’t have growing up. And the benefits helped him afford a house in a very nice section of Nassau County.
Was gonna make the same point.
It's deeply fucked up how predatory military recruiting is, giving promises of not just benefits but of finding a purpose and comradery/family, all just to get disposable bodies for the meat grinder to abandon later when they're traumatized and need help-
i know this is true but i definitely need reminders like this sometimes bc every army guy ive ever personally met is the "my dipshit cousin brayden" type
Yup. I'd say my boyfriend is still proud to be a Marine vet in his own way (he served from 1997-2002 including in Kosovo but avoided Afghanistan and Iraq), but he joined bc he couldn't pay for college despite good grades and shitton of extracurricular stuff. But he saw things he was not ok with.
it is also mildly funny that some people who think they're going to have a violent revolution also keep pushing lefty ex-military out of things
like, good luck with the whole thing I guess
