Apple ads, 1984: “we will save the world from dystopian conformity”
Apple ads, 2024: “we will crush all of human creativity into a small rectangle”
marketing is marketing, but it’s very instructive to see the image they think they’re selling us and how much bleaker it is
THIS RIGHT HERE! A STEM teacher told my students to stay out of those Mickey Mouse classes that I teach (history/humanities) because all they’ll ever need from now on is STEM. And…here we are!
Apple hasn't targeted creatives correctly in many many years.
They used to be the go to for photo, movie, and audio editing.
Now, software companies barely support MacOS.
Thinking about this mechanized destruction in light of the AI-ification of everything and how actual creative endeavors are being literally and figuratively flattened in an eternal quest for profits tells me a lot about how tech companies view the world.
holy shit. I'm more convinced that the only devil's advocate we actually need is someone in every tech company meeting going "for fucks sake are you asshats actually hearing yourself here"
Causing your target audience to feel anguish and despair is certainly a choice...
"Look! The focus group is crying!!"
"Those aren't happy tears, Tim..."
Just hearing about it made me think of a Pokémon ad from around the turn of the century, in which a busload of Pokémon get compacted down into a Gameboy. Then I saw it and no, that's actually horrifying in a way the Pokémon ad somehow never was.
Man, if I wanted to sell my product to artists, I would perhaps NOT film a commercial that appears to have naked contempt for everything artists are and do...
Just a thought.
This will probably end up being like the outrage of the death of Cecil the Lion. Lots of backlash and death threats. Then time goes on and Kenya reinstates hunting for profit when nobody is paying attention anymore or the hype dies down.
I'd say using the company name as a pejorative works.
Man, what an unexpectedly horrifying ad! The concept of "look at all this neat stuff you can do in this tiny rectangle" is fine, but it was so violent!
The ad just makes me sad and grossed out. I mean, I see where they're going? But all that nice stuff getting crushed just makes me sad. And WTAF with the toy getting its head crushed and it's eyes popping out are you serious with this?
Someone else pointed out how just a minor change to putting the items into the tablet like it's a portal changes the entire message from "We will destroy these things" to "look at how this can help you as an artist".
