I am glad he got to live a long, fulfilling life - few people have ever brought more joy to more people
in celebration of an incredible man, please enjoy this essay by @joeposnanski.bsky.social about the man who he called the greatest player in baseball history
It's just a shame we couldn't have licked that whole racism deal in society within his lifetime. I hope he was impressed enough with the progress we've made so far though.
Wow I just looked up how old he was two days ago. Very odd timing. I still have an autographed baseball from Willie Mays that I got maybe 30 years ago.
Well I wish @theathletic.bsky.social would let me read it. But I don't care about their site enough to make an account. Why would you not let me read one damn story without taking my information???
Sorry to hear of his passing. I know absolutely nothing about Baseball, but I knew about him cause he was Charlie Brown's favourite player and Joe Henry dedicated a beautiful song to him. Sometimes athletes resonate far beyond their geography and enter the collective unconscious...
I painted some big graphics at the Giants ballpark in SF before it opened. The safety guy said Willie Mays would come around a chat with the contractors and gave him a bunch of autographed baseballs to give out to contractors who did an especially great job at keeping their people safe.
