Actually, IMO, the real lesson here is for centrists. For years the political class has promoted the left as a kind of bogeyman that attacks middle class lifestyle. "Radicalism", etc. One of the main power centrists still have is to promote comfort and stability. "This is a safe choice", etc. 1/2

Very Catholic viewpoint, I suppose. But Silk's homily on the path to the landers about loving Hyacinth, Remora and the Rajan after the wedding, Apu-Punchau's advice in Urth, all variations on this. "We are all torturers" coming to "good men should not spend their lives inflicting pain".

Arguably not the worst thing he does to Jolenta, at least he rationalised to Dorcas that he was bluffing then. I was musing on this a lot over the last few days before this came up and fundamentally I think it comes to a recurring theme of Wolfe: there are no acts of redemption, only forgiveness.
