I saw the first one in Hawaii at the beach last weekend. I was really hoping none of them would survive the boat trip intact.

It takes time, money and patience to reach them. They talk a lot about going with their gut. Timing is important in reaching them: they rarely make up their minds before the last minute, but they burn out on political ads by then, so you have to have a relationship with them long before then.

I’ve done voter reg/GOTV/poll watching for 25 years and I say this to anyone who will listen: swing voters aren’t moderates. They’re weirdos with a random grab bag of political opinions that no candidate can satisfy. They aren’t your socially liberal/fiscally conservative parents in the suburbs.

Jailing people for being homeless is a classic American policy: stupid, brutal, and very expensive.

There are two or three days in law school that, if you have any internal sense of justice, will make you want to scream from the rooftops and burn your textbooks. The day you study the felony murder rule is one of them.

just remember trump won't read your jokes about him, unless, as we recently found out, you get jury selected on one of his other trials, in which case they might actually be read out to him to his face, so, y'know, go for it

If you are not visibly white, then you're going into the truck whether you've got your papers or not Many of the children who were separated from their families at the southern border had the legal right to be here as refugees. That didn't stop the govt from kidnapping them anyway

Every time I go into a McDonalds it’s full of young people charging their phones and using the WiFi. It’s what coffee shops used to be before they all locked their WiFi and their bathrooms. And if you use the app, they’re practically giving the food away.

“I will not make prison my life,” says Vega Moore, who has earned his GED and taught himself multiple languages while incarcerated.

But despite these rehabilitation efforts, Virginia's parole board just denied him release for the fourth time. boltsmag.org/virginia-par...

New at The Watch: Trump wants to deport more people than the populations of NYC, Chicago, and L.A. combined. It would cost $1 trillion+, and require a force larger than the U.S. Army. It also can't be done. But that isn't the point. It's about giving his supporters the human suffering they crave.

When I was a 21yo congressional staffer, the company we ordered office supplies from used to send promotional cookies and tins of popcorn. The higher ups freaked out and asked the ethics office if it was ok.

On collateral consequences: Marked by Devah Pager (or anything by Devah Pager) Maybe Prison by any other name? On policing: the rise of the warrior cop is great, but when I was a student, the book that provoked the most discussion in my classes was Ghettoside by Jill Leovy

I tried to post a comment on the blog but I think I messed up. Two topics I suggested were the use of algorithms in CJ, from sentencing to placement to programs and treatment to release options, and the constitutional/procedural issues around specialized dockets/problem-solving courts

Your class sounds great, I wish I could’ve taken it in law school. I’m going to keep thinking, but the first book that popped in my head is Halfway Home by Reuben Miller

I once stayed at a hotel on the Lake of the Ozarks and there were signs in each room warning you that you might see tarantulas. I got very little sleep.

Dear University Presidents: They are coming for you. They don’t care if you give in to every single demand, roll over and play dead. They are coming for you. Stop treating this like a good faith inquiry from civic minded leaders. It’s a hit job.
